Photos and other items contributed by several people, including you and your father, have made the site what it is. Thanks again.

I know that my Dad would have been flattered that anyone would have thought that his collection was worth anything. By the way, I finished re-posting all of the photos in this thread that Facebook had changed the addresses of and changed them all over to photobucket.

Anyone know what the story of that captured German steam locomotive is? Does it still exist anywhere? I would have thought that if one went through all the effort to bring something like that over here, it would have been preserved?

I'm no authority on European motive power, but it looks like one of the "Kriegslok" 2-10-0s that were mass produced, and examples of which survive in Germany and other European countries, including Russia.

You are very welcome. I'm happy that these slides have value to some people. The slides are 67 years old and as time marches on there are fewer around from that time.

The last two photos were a new exhibit at the Rail Fair for 1949; The Cypress Gardens Water Show:

http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1949 ... s-tomorrow

The Chicago tribune article linked above explains that over 1,200,000 people visited the fair in 1948.

All photos from June, 1949.

Steve -

Like the photo of the exhibition of cabooses from the 1949 edition of the Fair. NYC, Pennsy and, what looks to be, B&O. Wish the numbers of the cars could be seen to determine if any of these particular cars ended up being preserved. The odds are probably against it, but you never know!

I might try to display these on a screen with a projector and see if the focus is any better. I suspect that the camera and film were capable of better clarity but I don't know if something went wrong back then or if the film has degenerated over the past 67 years or if my scanner has an issue.
