visiting chicago as a kid seeing all them flashy signs was, geezow. Its wasnt just railroads, other ads as well. Ft Wayne had a big Reddy Kilowatt flashy sign in Ft Wayne on the GE building, but Chicago, wow.

It was like Vegas, it was a -thing-, splashy streamliner thing to do.

I really hope the "Dog Grooming" sign is part of the restoration of the Skokie sign.

Unfortunately I don't think IRM got the Greyhound Bus nor Dog Grooming portions... I believe this sign as originally arranged was somewhat infamous among local railfans due to that combination. :-)

Frank & Group- Sorry for posting on such an old topic, I just registered. While we originally did not get those signs, we recently were able to get the Greyhound sign!! We will be displaying it inside the Hoffman Garage - hopefully by the start of next season. Thanks, Ray.

Both of the railroad stations in Knoxville had neon...acres of it on the SR station and a large red & white sign hanging out front of the L&N.

It seems like the station in Nashville had a little bit too.

Chicago was a mecca of these huge neon signs, lighting up and animated flashing away, drive up the Dan Ryan going to the CERA meetings years ago these signs were not missable, one after another. Lit up like Vegas. All gone....

Miller Engineering makes model versions of many of these including some Chicago favs.

What became of the IC sign?

ahk...this was an old thread! ..deja vu above...

Two large "P&LE" neon signs remain long after the railroad was absorbed by CSX. Atop the former P&LE office building/depot in Pittsburgh the P&LE sign is intact and lighted. The building itself is now in other hands, but the sign is nicely preserved and lights up the Monongahela River side of downtown Pittsburgh.

On the other hand, a similarly huge P&LE sign remains atop the former hump tower at the abandoned Gateway Yard in the Youngstown, OH area. Both the sign and the tower are derelict.
