Post subject: | Interesting "Freecycle" Find; SP History |
Well, after I put out a "railroad items wanted" ad on my local freecycle network, I ended up with a box of old railroad items. Most of the stuff in the box is old O gauge publications from the 50's (300-piece kits, anyone?) However, there was one envelope with a Southern Pacific Lines logo on it. Inside were a number of black-and-white photographs from the 1940's. Some of these photographs show SP cab-forward #4126 lying on its side after wrecking on a mountainside. Some of the photographs have a stamp on the back that reads "Fred G. Davis, Photographer". The envelope that the photos came in was sent to Mr. A. R. Solomon in Seattle,WA from a Wallace J. Norby in Portland, OR. Does anyone recognize any of those names? Was Mr. Davis the company photographer? Also, are any other photos of the wreck of the #4126 known to exist? --Drew Black |

I am working on classifying about 15,000+ photos at the SMU DeGolyer Library in Dallas. While not yet into SP, I will check to see if there are any photos of SP 4126 in the files when I return in 2 weeks. There are over 200 railroad files to be worked on, so it will be a while to complete the project. Email me at h_k_nicholls@peoplepc.com and leave me a message on your exact wants. That way, I can have a reminder when I return to Dallas. I will pull the SP files and see what is there. |

Drew, any chance you could scan and post a few of them here? |

Okay, the scanner isn't currently working, so I've just photographed the prints, four at a time. Anyone seen these before? Or are they one-of-a-kind? |

All I see are the words Image, Image, Image, Image. Is it my browser? I don't think you can cut and paste images onto this board, but have to use the software to set a link to where ever the images are hosted (Flickr, Instagram, whatever). Michael Seitz Missoula MT |

Michael Seitz Missoula MT By viewing page source I was able to get several links such as: https://7qs0yg.dm1.livefilestore.com/y2p9CNs0diwibJp74N2NFTOExgxg7IT-htvYF6FEBorbdYkSnccyQrEKWHMEb80aZ-j3TYqpoXuNWWjSqXfhKk8g0Sj0e7heKjD1gZRWCAS7Qk/IMG_8703.JPG?psid=1 This appears to be a private file on Windows Live Skydrive--he did it right, and he can probably see it himself, but because it's not a public file it doesn't show up to anyone else. Going to have to set it to public or rehost it somewhere else before we can see it. |

You can't use cut and paste to include images with your post. However, you can upload images as attachments. The "Upload Attachment" procedure is just below the Preview/Submit/Save/Cancel bar at the bottom of the "Post a reply" area. For Filename, use the Browse button to find the file on your computer (or manually enter its name), add a File comment if desired, and click "Add the file" (The size of attachments is limited, so reduce the image resolution as much as possible.) |

Another set. I scanned the back of the wreck photo to show the photographer's mark.
