Yeah...which didn't work out so well!

It was the tripleheader on 10/8/89 (#12,14 & 15)....seems like it uncoupled between the second and third locomotive. We were at "Runk Field" and two light locomotives came into view, backed up, returned with the rest of its consist, and continued to Colgate Grove. Nothing major, just a curiosity.

If I'm not mistaken the final "four engine" Spectacular was Y2K, but only featured doubleheaders. What year was the quadrupleheader?

Tom/ADM IV -

Txhighballer stated in his comments in this thread above, that he thought that there had been "no standard gauge Mikado doubleheaders in the modern era", so EBT (and D&RGW for that matter) 3 foot gauge 2-8-2's wouldn't be applicable. I do wonder however, if perhaps some of the logging Mikes out west might not have been doubleheaded somewhere back in time.

Over the years Hammond 17, port of grays harbor 5 and CC and C 15 have all double headed. Soon, when we are done with our rebuild of the 17, we will be able to do our own mike double header again.

Not to mention in Colorado and New Mexico (D&S and C&T) whereas K27, K28, and K36 series locomotives doublehead on a fairly regular basis to this day.

To heck with that. We're all waiting for a "Rush Limbaugh doubleheader", based on his toll-free call-in number:

282 - 2882 !

Thanks Stathi. I thought that might be the case, but I was not sure.

This is somewhat tangential, but what is the status of the traction collection at ITM? Is the museum still planning on restoring some form of electric operation in the future?

Frank -

Good question. I've wondered about that myself. I rode the line once. CTA 4000's maybe? Perhaps the question needs its own separate thread.

Aside from a Mikado doubleheader with 2-8-2T #17 (which I'm not even sure if I've seen that), I haven't seen a standard-gauge Mikado doubleheader (tender locomotives ONLY)...until yesterday.

Yesterday, at the Valley Railroad, they doubleheaded 2-8-2 #40 & 2-8-2 #3025 for their 2:00 & 3:30 trains. Here's a link to a video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1azhK6vZcUY

I think this is an absolutely beautiful doubleheader. Well done, Valley Railroad. I hope this isn't the last time we see this.

I made a trip down into the area last week and it looks to be worse than I thought. Track has been pulled up to Yandes Street which is the leg of the old wye. So not only do you need a switch onto the CSX (NYC) main but about 4,000 feet of track needs to be re-installed. At this point, the plan to put in a bridge at 10th Street and re-install the track on the Port Authority's ROW might make more sense as it gets both ITM and the Port closer to their goal of servicing Union Station.
