That is a really attractive train!

This just might tie in to the "building super steam today" topic as well. LOL

Does anyone know more about the drawings it was built to? It would be interesting to know more about them.

I read somewhere that Kloke used the specs for "UP 119" out at Golden Spike to design the York. Those specs were made using photos of the original UP 119, so that would be the history of the design, with some artistic license invoked hahah.

At the gift shop at the Promontory visitor center they sell a good (and very affordable) booklet about the design and building of the replica locomotives that isn't dumbed down very far (in fact it probably confuses a lot of people who don't know steam design very well). When I was there in September, they also were selling a CD with all the plans they used to build them.
You can look through their listings here to see if they still sell the stuff: http://www.nps.gov/gosp/supportyourpark/index.htm

Thx

I just went through the list and found a lot of stuff that was there when I went to the park less than a year ago isn't on that list. That booklet is on the list, and I strongly recommened it to anyone who knows steam, it's a great insight into what went into the Promontory replicas.
Going off topic a bit, I feel that these replicas should be on every railroad buff's 'steam bucket list' as they're amazing in real life, I couldn't get over all the tiny little details they included which you never see in photos.

Right at the bottom, above the "did you know?" section.
It looks like this below, click on the PDF on that site, which I've marked the link it red here:

Prices are subject to change.

Shipping and handling costs are not included in posted price.

Link to Bookstore Catalog in PDF.

Link to New Arrivals page.

Still available! See below:

Thank you for contacting Golden Spike National Historic Site. We do still carry the locomotive drawings DVD-ROM. The item is called Promontory Locomotive Project Plans for Jupiter and No. 119 DVD-ROM. The item costs $26.57 after tax and before shipping. If you would like to order a copy of the DVD-ROM, I would recommend contacting our bookstore manager Gary Willden. He can be reached by phone at 435-471-2209 x22 or by e-mail at gary_willden@partner.nps.gov.
I hope you find this information helpful. If you need any additional information,
please feel free to contact me again.

Sincerely,

I've had this up before, but this looks like a good place and time to bring it back.

Here are some construction photos of No. 17, courtesy of Kloke Locomotive Works.

Finally, we have at least three photos of a complete or nearly complete passenger car. Overall appearance came out quite well, but it still needs appropriate trucks! (Yeah, I know, nitpicking again. . .) Photos courtesy of Orange Blossom Cannonball:

I was at Promontory this past Friday, and the plans were still for sale in the gift shop.

Now that would be a sight...the Leviathan and the York, together in PA, doing a "golden spike" deal, running trips together, the York leading one way, the Leviathan the other...

As long as we're foaming it up in here...

What I want to see is the Leviathan and the Jupiter together. Engines of the same class, built for the same railroad, both incredibly significant in their own rights...

Sorry, need to go wipe my mouth off

Steam Into History/Northern Central Railroad is making progress on an engine shed for its locomotive. Photos below are from various sources on the line's Facebook page:

Shop area, pit visible beyond the ties:

From the top picture of the pit and engine house, looks like its going to be a tight fit to get around the engine to do any work on it. Let alone just trying to walk around it.
