It's been a good winter/spring for us. We finally finished installing the Radius Arm cross-tie frame piece. Just needs to be welded up in the right angles due to the cracks we found. Additionally, we finished up some small things on the pilot truck. We drilled the pedestal bracket to install the pedestal bracket cross-tie rod.

Over the spring we have started the center pin for the pilot truck. The original was lost at some point. So we have designed a new. We have been working on the pieces to complete the pin.

This is the base plate for the pin being made on the lathe. It's sized and the only thing we need to do is groove the one side for the center part of the pin to fit into. We will cut the outside of the groove on an angle so we can get a full penetration weld on the joint.

This is the center part of the pin. We used 1/2" thick walled steel. We ensured the end that needs to be welded to base plate is true. This will be cut down once we to our first test fit. We don't know what the height should be so we are reverse engineering that part of it.

Here you can see the pin sitting on the pilot truck. The top part you see will be pressed int and drilled so the equalizer bar bolt can be brought up thru. The large bushing is for the frame. We added that so the frame is not damaged by the center pin. The truck was broken down to be painted and a few small details finished up.

Awesome work Steve. Are you hoping to have 565 look like a 2-6-0 again in time for Railfest?

Another great work weekend. Saturday Ken and Doug cleaned up around the engine including the pit. Peter and J.T. finished up the center pin and nearly finished build up of the of the pilot.
Sunday we had 4 welders! Nic brought up Dan and Nic plus a new guy Brian. They knocked welding up the #1 driver springs and welded up the cross tie under the engine. JT and I finished putting the pilot truck together except for the radius arm attachment point bushing its done!
Ken, me, Doug, and JT went out in the yard to finalize the design of the cross equalizer bar. We believe we have a 90% solution for it, this is the part that goes across between the front springs and a link goes down to equalizer.
We need to make shoes and one wedge for the journal boxes for #1 driver. It's really getting there. Thanks to all who have helped our hard is paying off.

This is last month's pic. We have the oil boxes installed and across the front is the bar that goes between the pedestals. You can see the 4 holes in the pedestal. That's the wrong place. We thought it would be round bar between those holes. But just in the last few months we discovered a picture of a rolled over 500 series DL&W. To our amazment there is a flat bar that runs arcoss between the bolts that goes from front to back on the pedestals. So we made a flat bar and it's installed. I hope that one of us got a completed pic today. LOL

Oil box- a fixed box or reservoir, for lubricating a bearing; esp., the box for oil beneath the journal of a railway-car axle.

Might it not be an example of regional/railroad-specific jargon? I think there was a thread regarding this recently-quite interesting!

Steve, it's really looking great! Kudos to you and the team. Will your work be on display for Railfest?

Max yes. The area around the engine is all cleaned up. We moved our tool into the stall too.

As promised. Here is the finished pilot. Thanks to Peter A. Bellisario who posted on Erie-Lackawanna Facebook the roll over pic of 553. This pic was our Holy Grail to help us complete the pilot. That pic showed us the bar across the front. Once we discovered that our photograph expert enhanced and enlarged some pics we had of the front of the 565 and we then saw the bar on 565 later in her career!

Thanks to Alexander D. Mitchell for the idea to put the parts next to the engine as we worked on them. The visitors get to see the parts and on the days we are there we talk and explain what is going on.

A remarkable, well planned, well researched, renovation. All locomotives should have people like you to look after them.
