I checked another source: Steve Sandifer's list of surviving Santa Fe passenger equipment.

According to that source, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR has 5 ex-AT&SF coaches: 3085, 3103, 3105, 3109, and 3165; the first 4 of which I have on the list above as going into commuter service.

Which 2 of the 3 cars that Steve Zuiderveen sold to the Washington Central were used in the consist of the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train? Anyone know what happened to the third car?

The #3103 (#2411) I had listed as having gone from Steve Zuiderveen to the Washington Central, so Steve Sandifer listing it on the CVSR would partially answer the question of which 2 cars were in the regular SofW consist: the #3106 (#2414) and #3114 (#2420). What I still don't know is which one of the 2 became the #101, and which one of the 2 became the #103.

The Cedar Rapids & Iowa City (CRANDIC) had at least 3 ex-AT&SF coaches, numbered #112, #113 (ex-#2413) & #115 (ex-#2407). These 3 cars later went to the Oklahoma RY Museum, and the #112 & #113 are now on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR. The only car I haven't been able to identify is the #112. Does anyone know the identity of this coach, and did the CRANDIC have any other ex-AT&SF coaches?

Steve Sandifer lists the #3109 (#2404) as being on the CVSR, and a comparison of the window arrangement of the #112 with that of the #113 places it in the same Budd Lot, #999, so logically, the #3109 (#2404) is indeed the previously unidentified #112. However, I could be wrong and the #112 could actually be the #3085, the #3165, or another car altogther. Hmm.

As a side note, does anyone know if the #3165 went into commuter service?

Using information from Steve Sandifer's extant AT&SF equipment, here's the latest update to the list:

[1] Commuter No. [2] (Assignment) [3] (AT&SF No.) [4] Notes & Disposition
#3085 (EL) (same) To NJT; Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR
#2411 (PC) (#3103) To NJT; S. Zuiderveen to Washington Central RR to Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR
#2413 (PC) (#3105) To NJT; Cedar Rapids & Iowa City #113 to Oklahoma RY Mus. #113 "The Oklahoman" to Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR #113
#2404 (PC) (#3109) To NJT; Cedar Rapids & Iowa City #112 to Oklahoma RY Mus. #112 to Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR #112

Additions and corrections are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Greetings:
The Valley's aquisition and subsequent prompt disposal "enmass" of five cars listed as sold by SZ in 3/88 leads me to believe that these were the same cars. As I recall, Valley only owned the cars for a month or so. Just long enough to get a crew (Steve: were you there?) to Mahwah(?), strip out the A/Cs and get out of there.
These A/C units continue to cool our Dinner Train and provide parts.

Thanks, Dave!

Okay, so that being the case, here's the latest update:

[1] Commuter No. [2] (Assignment) [3] (AT&SF No.) [4] Notes & Disposition
#2400 (PC) (#3080) To NJT; Valley RR to S. Zuiderveen to Kasten Railcar Services
#2414 (PC) (#3106) To NJT; Valley RR to S. Zuiderveen to Washington Central RR
#2419 (PC) (#3113) To NJT; Valley RR to S. Zuiderveen to Volant, PA gift shop to Harlansburg Station Trans. Mus.
#2421 (PC) (#3116) To NJT; Valley RR to S. Zuiderveen to Volant, PA gift shop to Harlansburg Station Trans. Mus.
#2422 (PC) (#3137) To NJT; Valley RR to S. Zuiderveen to Kasten Railcar Services to Southern Constructors (at the Forks of the River Ind. Park, Knoxville, TN)

Thanks again to ETA, Dave, Brian, and Steve for providing all the information regarding ex-AT&SF coaches in commuter service!

Additions and corrections are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Checked another source: the Fallen Flags photo archive at http://rr-fallenflags.org/. Under the Erie-Lackawanna "Passenger Information" page, there was a link in the "Commuter Coaches" section to a separate page outlining the ex-AT&SF coaches in the #3070-#3099 range which were purchased by NJDOT: http://rr-fallenflags.org/el/pax/atsf-coaches.html. From that, I made 3 corrections:

Added #3073 to the list.
Removed #3083 from the list.
Added #3084 to the list.

Additions and corrections are welcome. Thanks in advance.

I might have missed it, but I didn't see any disposition for 3090. My notes show it as being on the 'first' iteration of the Winnepesaukee, roughly twenty years ago. I don't know if it made the move to Maine. I rode in it on one of the New Hampshire Fall Foliage trips, and most likely rode in it or saw it here in NJ.

Thanks, EDM, for the information on the 3090! If it is no longer part of the Hobo-Winnipesaukee roster, then what operation in Maine owns it now?

I've gathered some additional information regarding the ex-AT&SF coaches now owned by CVSR. The CVSR website states that all five were formerly used in commuter service by PC/NJT and were later sold to CRANDIC as #110-#114. CVSR purchased the five coaches from CRANDIC in 1994.

This answers the question of whether or not #3165 was used in commuter service, however I don't know if #3165 was renumbered to the #24xx-series when in New Jersey or if it retained the AT&SF number. Can anyone clarify?

Seeing as how #112 (#3109/#2404) and #113 (#3105/#2413) were used for a time by the Oklahoma Railway Museum, I can only assume that these two cars were leased by OKRX from CVSR. Does anybody know how long this lease was for? Also, CRANDIC also had a sixth ex-AT&SF coach, #115 (#3199/#2947/#2407), that was for a time also used by OKRX; the logical conclusion being that #115 was also acquired by CVSR in 1994 from CRANDIC and also leased to OKRX. As it is not listed on the CVSR website, does anyone know the current whereabouts of #115?

The CVSR website states that all five coaches were sold intially to PC, which renumbered the ex-AT&SF coaches into the #24xx-series, whereas ex-AT&SF coaches sold/assigned to the CNJ and EL retained the Sante Fe numbers. Previously, I had #3103, #3105 , and #3109 listed as being sold/assigned to PC, and #3085 as being sold/assigned to EL. Does anyone know if #3085 was sold/assigned to PC, and if so, what #24xx-series number it carried?

Finally, can anyone clarify which three coaches are currently #110, #111, and #114? (See below.)

Here's the current listings:

[1] Commuter No. [2] (Assignment) [3] (AT&SF No.) [4] Notes & Disposition
#3085 (EL) (same) To NJT; CR&IC #11x to CVSR #11x
#2411 (PC) (#3103) To NJT; Valley RR to S. Zuiderveen to Washington Central RR to CR&IC #11x to CVSR #11x
#2413 (PC) (#3105) To NJT; CR&IC #113 to CVSR #113; leased to OKRX
#2404 (PC) (#3109) To NJT; CR&IC #112 to CVSR #112; leased to OKRX
#3165 (??) (same?) To NJT; CR&IC #11x to CVSR #11x
#2407 (PC) (#2947) ex-coach observation #3199; to NJT; CR&IC #115 to CVSR #115; leased to OKRX; current whereabouts unknown

I am the "frequent poster" mentioned by J David. I do not have a file of all the NJT cars I owned. Many of them I owned for a month or two, and then resold to someone's dinner train. It was how I made a living after I was laid off by Steamtown Foundation. I think the five cars Dave mentioned went to Kasten Railcar Service.

Southern Construction did scrap the 3070 (although the dim reaches of my mind seems to recall the name was "Southerd", not Southern). The car was in Newfoundland at the time, and I was sick of it. If I had any inkling it was going to happen, I could have bought it; I thought it belonged to URHS.

I have a worn-out copy of the Randall equipment annual (the one with the green cover, long ago missing) that I noted in the margins which NJT cars I owned. If I can find it, I wil report.

“Abato” is Jeff Abato Truck Sales. I acquired some cars through him. I also bought a lot of ni-cad batteries out of green motors through him. He had a scrap yard on a dock adjacent to the Greenville car float, but I think I got most of the cars/parts directly out of the Mahwah yard.

ETIX was a tourist train that ran for a while out of Galveston. KRSX is Kasten Railcar Service. I think WCRC is Washington Central

Thanks, Steve, for all the information on the cars you purchased! Clarified the identity of the second car now at the Harlansburg Station Transportation Museum!

WCRC does indeed stand for the Washington Central Railroad, which operated the successful Spirit of Washington Dinner Train in the Seattle area for many years (before a highway expansion project killed it), and they used 2 of the ex-AT&SF coaches in their regular consist. What I don't know is which 2 of the 3 were used. The 2 cars were renumbered and named, as the #103 "Cascade" (reconfigured to dining tables) and the #101 "Olympic" (remodeled to a half-open air coach, half-closed dining area).

After the SofW Dinner Train folded, the WCRC cars were stored for several years on the former Lewis & Clark Railroad (ex-NP) down in Vancouver, WA, before being purchased by Iowa Pacific-San Luis & Rio Grande for their passenger operation on the Santa Cruz & Monterey Bay Railway. Other than the 2 Canadian covered wagons that pulled the SofW, I have seen no evidence as of yet that the ex-WCRC cars have gone into service on the SC&MB. They had been stored for a while, and Iowa Pacific is most likely in the process of refurbishing the cars at their facility in Colorado. Currently, the SC&MB runs are using ex-AT&SF Budd full domes, ex-AT&SF Budd 48 seat leg rest coaches and ex-PRR Budd commuter coaches rebuilt from "Inn"-series 21 roomette sleepers.

Here's a photo each of the 2 ex-AT&SF coaches that WCRC used in the consist of the Spirit of Washington Dinner Train:
#101 "Olympic" (half-and-half car): http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1060407 (Robert Ulberg photo)
#103 "Cascade" (table car): http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1060410 (Robert Ulberg photo)

As a side note, does anyone know what "ETIX" stood for?

Brian Norden wrote:
Probably data transfer/copy error.

I got out my copy of Railway Passenger Car Annual Vol I 1973-1974 (orange cover) from RPC Publication with the railroad car data compiled by W. David Randall. The listing for PennCentral provides this information:
100-seat coach 2424 is ex-ATSF 2946, ex-3198
100-seat coach 2425 is ex-ATSF 2956, ex-Taos
100-seat coach 2426 is ex-ATSF 2957, ex-3240

Same information in the Vol II 1975 green-cover edition.

Thanks, Brian, for the clarification on the commuter numbers of the 2946 and 2957! Also was able to add the 2425 (ex-2956, nee-sleeper "Taos") to the list!

ETIX Was Excursion Trains, Inc, owned by Franklin Denson, operator of the excursion train which ran between Houston and Galveston. He was also the impetus of Texas state law setting the limit of liability of what an excursion train must carry: 5 million dollars. That law is still in effect. There is much more to that story...

I can confirm the CVSR currently has 3 left. #110, #111, & #112.

Thanks for the info on ETIX, txhighballer!

Thanks for the info on the CVSR coaches, Ray! Any info on where the others went?

Having received Volumes 1, 2 & 3 of W. David Randall's Streamliner Cars, I'd thought I'd look up which AT&SF coaches ended up in commuter service, the result being several additions and corrections to this list:

Okay, so to wrap up with this subject:

Among the 98 AT&SF Budd and P-S lightweight coaches that went into commuter service, I have several remaining questions:

1. The Indiana Transportation Museum (Noblesville) acquired fifteen of the ex-Santa Fe Budd-built coaches from NJT in 1989, but so far I have only identified eight of them. I know that of the other seven, one was burned by vandals while in storage. Listed below are the eight I have so far identified. Does anyone know the numbers of the other seven (including the vandalized car)?

AT&SF #3072/NJT #3072/ITMZ #3072
AT&SF #3078/NJT #3078/ITMZ #3078
AT&SF #3081/NJT #3081/ITMZ #3081
AT&SF #3092/NJT #3092/ITMZ #3092
AT&SF #3093/NJT #3093/ITMZ #3093
AT&SF #3095/NJT #3095/ITMZ #3095
AT&SF #3096/PC #2401/NJT #2401/ITMZ #3096
AT&SF #3099/NJT #3099/ITMZ #3099

2. I have identified one of the three ex-MTA commuter coaches at the Milwaukee Road depot in Madison, WI. One is an ex-NYC P-S coach, the identified car is MTA #2438 (AT&SF #3155) from Budd Lot #9613-001, and the third, unidentified car matches the features of the #2438, which leads me to think it is from the same Lot. Eight of the sixteen cars in that Lot entered commuter service, listed below. Does anyone know which of these cars is also at Madison?

AT&SF #3151/PC #2435/MTA #2435
AT&SF #3152/PC #2436/MTA #2436
AT&SF #3154/PC #2437/MTA #2437
AT&SF #3155/PC #2438/MTA #2438/Madison Depot Restaurant
AT&SF #3156/PC #2439/MTA #2439
AT&SF #3157/PC #2440/MTA #2440
AT&SF #3158/PC #2441/MTA #2441
AT&SF #3165/PC #2423/NJT #2423/CRANDIC/CVSR

3. The Cedar Rapids & Iowa City (CRANDIC) acquired six of the ex-AT&SF Budd-built coaches, which were renumbered as #110-#115. I think I have matched up four of the cars (#111-#113, #115) with their Santa Fe/NJT numbers, as listed below. The Cuyahoga Valley acquired these six cars in 1994, but have only retained three (#110-#112). Does anyone know where the other three went? At least three of the six (including one of the retained cars) were leased to the Oklahoma Railway Museum--does anyone know for how long this lease was, and if all six cars were leased?

AT&SF #3085/NJT #3085/CRANDIC #11x-series number unknown/CVSR #11x-series number unknown

AT&SF #3103/PC #2411/NJT #2411/Steve Zuiderveen/Washington Central RR/CRANDIC #111/CVSR #111--retained by CVSR

AT&SF #3105/PC #2413/NJT #2413/CRANDIC #113/CVSR #113--leased to the Oklahoma Railway Museum as "The Oklahoman"

AT&SF #3109/PC #2416/NJT #2416/CRANDIC #112/CVSR #112--retained by CVSR--leased to the Oklahoma Railway Museum

AT&SF #3165/PC #2423/NJT #2423/CRANDIC #11x-series number unknown/CVSR #11x-series number unknown

AT&SF #2947/PC #2407/NJT #2407/CRANDIC #115/CVSR #115--leased to the Oklahoma Railway Museum as the "Kerr McGee Explorer"

4. The Blue Ridge Scenic rosters an ex-AT&SF Budd-built coach which was formerly owned by the Greensboro Chapter NRHS, #549 "Pomona", which according to my notes had been acquired by the Chapter from URHS--Jerry LaBoda's website lists the #549 as being AT&SF #3137/PC #2422/NJT #2422--but as reported earlier in this thread, the #3137/#2422 is the car now at Southern Constructors at the Forks of the River Industrial Park in Knoxville. Does anyone know the identity of the #549?

AT&SF #3109/PC #2416/NJT #2416/CRANDIC #112/CVSR #112--retained by CVSR--leased to the Oklahoma Railway Museum

Looking back at this car I am not sure that this is the correct history for this car since it was one of the ATSF coaches that was rebuilt from an observation car, ATSF 2948, 2949, 2956 - 2959. A shot of this car is linked too below, along with a shot of one of the rebuilt observation cars while it was still ATSF and ex-ATSF 2959, nee-3244 as AMTK 4461...

CVSR 112
ATSF 2957
AMTK 4461

One thing worth noting is the splicing of the corrugation on the side and roof where it was extended to cover the new flat end.

Another one of these cars is mentioned as being Blue Ridge Scenic's 549 but I still have to find the correct history for this car...

Another of the ATSF coaches that use to be on the CVSR was found in Fennville, Mi. Anyone know anything about this coach??? Its from the same series that most of the other CVSR ex-ATSF coaches were...

The CVSR bought six cars from the CRANDIC, they came to the CVSR numbered 110 thru 115. These cars were the back bone of the fleet until the 9 Akron Metro cars arrived. When it was determined that some of these cars were surplus, cars 113, 114 and 115 were offered for sale thru Ozark Mountain. The 113 and 115 were sold to the Oklahoma Railway Museum in 2005 (CVSR never leased ORM any cars) and the 114 was sold in 2006 and is the car pictured above at Fennville, Michigan.

Also, The car that is currently numbered 110 on the CVSR, is not the car that was purchased from the CRANDIC. This car was scrapped due to it's poor condition. The CVSR purchased the car that now carries that number from Ben Butterworth. The car had been used as a table car on the Twin Cities Rocket (I think) dinner train, before being purchased by CVSR.

Well, there is a problem (or two) in regards to this... there was a car matching the 113 (from the same series) that was painted for the CVSR...

http://www.oklahomarailwaymuseum.org/images/Equipment/412.jpg

And there is mention that 113 was rebuilt by CVSR in 2001 and sold to the OKRM in 2005 on the OKRM website. It also specifically states that the 115 was sold to CVSR in 1994 and was purchased by the OKEM from the CVSR in 2005.

Kind of shoots some holes in your statement... sorry.
