What appears to be an earlier series of photos predating the current preservation efforts. May be somewhat mislabeled as being in "New York."

Real easy: Restore the site, then turn it into an art museum. Like this former power plant in Rome.

Rome has enough "ruins" as is...

There are hundreds of 1920s through 1950s generating engines that outlived their service support and parts availability, sitting in buildings all over the US, including municipal power companies, water pumping facilities, and the basements of skyscrapers. Most of these will sit there in silence until the wreckers arrive to drop the building on top of them.

There are several 1930s era Diesels in my area that are perfectly preserved time capsules, the buildings are intact, well maintained, and still in use, but the engines are sitting just as they were on their last day of operation.

I have been looking for a slow speed diesel genset to transplant to our museum. I need something to generate a couple hundred KW of power to run equipment and the Cummins diesel genset that we have doesn't have much class.

I dismantled an Fairbanks Morse 32B for a client last year and fell in love with the big stationary diesels.

You might find other potentially operational (but no longer in regular service) FM units in one of several municipal power plants in central Nebraska.

Don't know if it's still in service, but the City of Vernon (southeast of downtown Los Angeles) had a diesel plant with five units based on German warship engines. It was built in the 1930s, and some years ago was still run as a "peaker" plant. I was there once when one of the diesels was "fired up" and it was quite a process.
