Great question but how about a new thread for that?

Okay, so per an inquiry in the "All Daylight Consist" thread, and a request for a new thread, here's a list of known surviving lightweight passenger cars from Southern's fleet. The list also includes cars from CNO&TP, L&N, FEC, A&WP, WofA, PRR, and NYC that were built for pool service on SOU routes. Also included are scrapped cars, cars with an unknown current status, and cars with no disposition information whatsoever (other than retirement dates). This first posting consists only of diners and sleepers from 2 different Lots.

Diners:

Eleven 44 seat diners built in 1949 by Budd in Lot #9624-030* for the Crescent. Ownership was eight SOU #3305-#3312, one CNO&TP #3869, one A&WP #501, and one L&N #2790.

*Cars built in Budd Order 030 were for service on SOU routes.

In the active Amtrak Heritage Fleet are 3 SOU diners:

SOU #3306 to Amtrak in 1979 as diner lounge #8380 to HEP 48 seat standard diner #8521 in approximately 1985

SOU #3307 to Amtrak in 1979 as diner lounge #8381 to HEP 48 seat griddle diner #8558 in 7/1985 (originally planned for conversion to standard diner #8522)

SOU #3309 to Amtrak in 1979 as diner lounge #8383 to HEP 48 seat standard diner #8524 in 11/1984

Retired from Amtrak:

A&WP #501 to Amtrak in 1971 as diner #8026 to HEP 48 seat standard diner #8750** in 3/1985 for service on the Auto Train (originally planned for conversion to standard diner #8529). Stored at Beech Grove shops in 6/1996. Sold in 1/2002 to Rail Quest America as 36 seat lounge RQAX #8750 "Yellowstone Park" for lease to American Orient Express and Montana Rockies Rail Tours. Leased to Alaska RR as ARR #323 2005-2009.

**All Heritage Fleet food service cars which underwent HEP conversion for service on the Auto Train received numbers in the #87xx range.

In addition, SOU #3305 was retired by SOU in 1975 after a fire. It is now in the collection of the Galveston Railroad Museum: http://www.galvestonrrmuseum.com/rolling-stock.html

Scrapped Cars:

CNO&TP #3869 to Amtrak in 1979 as diner lounge #8384 to HEP 48 seat standard diner #8751** in 2/1985 for service on the Auto Train (originally planned for conversion to standard diner #8525). Stored at Beech Grove shops in 6/1996. Put up for sale in 7/1999. Sold in 2000 to Alaska RR as ARR #321. Retired and stored. Sold to Alaska Metals Recycling in 2005 and scrapped.

L&N #2790 to Amtrak in 1971 as diner #8025 to HEP 48 seat standard diner #8752** in 4/1985 for service on the Auto Train (originally planned for conversion to standard diner #8530). Stored at Beech Grove shops in 6/1996. Put up for sale in 7/1999. Sold in 2000 to Alaska RR as ARR #322. Retired and stored. Sold to Alaska Metals Recycling in 2005 and scrapped.

You can add #3403 "Holston River" to the scrapped list. TVRM cut her up in the past year or two,but saved the side boards incase someone wants to apply them to a different car.

SOU #2005 "Flint River" (assigned to the Royal Palm) to Amtrak in 1979 as #2852. Sold 2/1982. Stored at Whippany Railway Museum, Whippany, NJ. To Georgia Railroad Excursion Authority and used on Heart of Georgia Railroad as SWGX #2005 "Flint River". Amtrak registration #800101. To Denver Railcar as DRCX #6114. Currently stored in Americus, GA.

I'm not sure where the Denver Railcar reference comes from. That may have been the ID "Flint River" moved as from New Orleans to Americus when NS moved the car for the Authority, but as far as I know the car is still owned by the Authority, although restoration work never went far due to budget constraints. As of Saturday (9/7/13) the car is still stored in Americus.

Some corrections and additions:

"Flint River" is owned by the Southwest Georgia Railroad Excursion Authority, which operates the S.A.M. Shortline Excursion Train over the Heart of Georgia Railroad. The car was acquired by the Authority in 2004 (IIRC) and arrived in Americus in April, 2005. The sleeper was purchased from the Louisiana Railroad Heritage Trust in New Orleans (Kenner, LA), who had received it and several other cars by donation in the mid 1980's, thought to have been sometime in 1985. The car had previously been in private excursion service and carried reporting marks "GRTX 4199" for Gator Rail Tours, an operation of a Mr. Alfred K. Nippert. Mr. Nippert apparently purchased a number of sleepers and lounge-sleepers for his excursion service, several of which wound up in New Orleans. (I'd appreciate any additional information anyone might have concerning the Gator Rail operations.)

"Flint River" had been acquired from Southern on Feb. 1, 1979 after SR exited the passenger train business, and it remained in Amtrak service until sold into private ownership (Mr. Nippert) in 1982.

A couple other cars I documented in New Orleans when we inspected "Flint River":

1) ACL "Virginia Beach", ACF 1949, AMT 3227, (Amtrak registration No. 800317 as GRTX 3193)

2) AMT 2303 "Humming Bird", ACF 1949, orig. ACL Ogeechee River, rblt P-S 1961.

3) a car only identified as AMT 2772 "Columbia"

4) one of the cars in Rainier Rails' "Unknown Status" category: an SR 10-6 sleeper that appears to have been SR 2002 "Dan River", carried reporting marks "STRX 2850", so was probably ex-AMT 2850, originally SR 2002. This car was observed to be in bad condition with interior fire damage and may have been scrapped by now, but the "museum" group has had several pieces for sale or threatened with scrapping for over 10 years and I have not been there since about 2002.

The Holston River was not scrapped but is still at TVRM. There are plans for it to go to a new home in the near future.

Al Nippert had a bunch of cars. IIRC New Georgia, TVRM and Spencer each got four. We got three 10&6s and the bedroom lounge Hollywood Beach (not the one with the glass roof, the other Hollywood Beach). I will go back and see if I can find my notes on who got what beyond the sleepers below.

Here is my list of 10&6 sleepers. I haven't updated it in a number of years (see what children and numerous other obligations like running a not-for-profit in your spare time keep you from keeping current?) and some of the other info in this thread may be more up to date.

2000 Alafina River wrecked 1975
2001 Altamaha River Al Nippert
2002 Dan River Al Nippert to George Stricker
2003 Catawba River Nippert to Spencer

2009 Potomac River Anbel Corp 1982
2010 Rapidan river Amtrak to Kasten to Bill Barmore
2011 Rivanna River Al Nippert to TVRM to Texas State
2012 Saluda River (no Info)
2013 Seneca River Al Nippert to TVRM (still there)
2014 Shenendoah River, Amtrak to Old Kenner to TVRM
2015 Rappahannock River Al Nippert to New Georgia
2016 St John’s River Al Nippert to TVRM to Don Early

Sorry everyone for the bad info about the "Holston River",but that was what I was told a few months ago by an active TVRM member on facebook. Another member jumped in and mentioned the signboards being saved.

I show the 3310 to be wrecked and scrapped in 1974. The 3311 was the car wrecked and scrapped in the wreck of the Southern Crescent at Elma, Virginia on December 3, 1978. The 3312 went to Ringling and then to Seminole Gulf Railway. I think this car was gutted and a generator put inside but I am not positive of that and not sure its whereabouts.

Post subject:  Re: Surviving SOU Lightweight Cars

Like Tim, my information is a little outdated but I am pretty sure the Dan River is still in New Orleans and probably needs to be scrapped given its condition.

I show the Altamaha River going from Al Nippert to a private party in Los Angeles. Not sure its whereabouts.

My notes show the Shenandoah River finally went to scrap. Is this right Tim?

I show the Otter River to be sold to Anbel Corp and scrapped or to Mexico.

Not sure where the Emory River went from New Georgia.

No clue on the Saluda River. This car showed on an old Amtrak roster way past any of the others but I never believed the roster. This is the one Southern/CNO&TP/CofG lightweight car on which I could never find a good lead.

Post subject:  Re: Surviving SOU Lightweight Cars

A little more info on the two cars Tim listed as "Roanoke Chapter". Sometime in early 1979, Southern donated three cars to us, Combine 727 (Budd, ex C of G), and Pullmans 2021 Yadkin River and 2210 Wauhatchie Valley. The Yadkin River was complete and generally in excellent condition, but it had wreck damage from the "Southern Crescent" derailment in Dec. 1978. One side of the vestibule was crushed, and the fluting was badly damaged on that side. The Wauhatchie Valley had been used as a parts car for many years at Haynes Shop. It was missing much of it's interior and mechanical components. Over the course of several months we cannibalized the Wauhatchie Valley to repair the Yadkin River. The remaining hulk of the 14-4 was scrapped a couple of years later. We ran the Yadkin River in excursion service, along with the 727 until 1991, when NS required heavy mechanical upgrades and an all red train. We sold the 727 to the Cuyohoga Valley RR about 1994. The Yadkin River was sold to Virginia Rail Investment in the late 1990's, it has since changed ownership. I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that it is now part of the Iowa Pacific collection. The Roanoke Valley was sold by the Asheville Chapter to a private owner. It is currently located at the Southern Appalachian Railway Museum

Finally for now, the 3308 was sold to Illinois Transit Assembly after the incident on the Silver Star. The car was stripped of usable parts I suspect and was scrapped.

Post subject:  Re: Surviving SOU Lightweight Cars

The Roanoke Valley is indeed at the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum but is not privately owned. SARM owns the car. This is the only remaining Southern 14-4 in its original configuration. The car is not in very good condition but we have made efforts to keep it watertight. When we first acquired the car we found trash in the trash cans from it's final run which was evidently on Christmas Eve of either 1970 or 1971 on an overflow section of the Crescent.

Let us know when you are ready to start on coaches.

Lets see if I can give a few updates:

A&WP 501 is now at Mid America Rail Car Leasing and I believe is available for lease (Amtrak Certified???). Either way, nice car.

SOU 3308 was a "crispy critter" as a result of cutting a gas tanker truck in two at a crossing in Florida on Amtrak. Les/ITAX bought it and removed the freshly overhauled trucks that Amtrak moved it to the Grove on and cut the rest, IIRC.

The Tombigbee River went into a restaurant in Clanton, AL. Trucks to HOD at Calera, AL.

The Chattahoochee River went from CSX to New Georgia to Southern Appalachia Railway Museum. SARM sold it to someone out West (Montana maybe for parts/trucks). What you're seeing at Vinings, GA is the West Point Route bag/RPO perhaps with the signs from the 10-6 stolen/applied for decoration.
