I'm looking at a photograph from around 1890 that shows half of the end of a boxcar. I only see the last digits of the reporting marks: "& J Ry." The boxcar is # 9241. Looking around on the net, I don't readily see a carrier with marks ending "& J". There is part of a preceding letter that may be "W" or "V", but that is not at all clear. Can any of you help with what railroad car I might be looking at? WJP

Greenwich and Johnsonville Railway (G&J) - today it is the Batten Kill Railroad in Upstate NY.

HI
This information comes from a reprint Travelers Official Railway Guide from June 1893, I did find four railroads ending with & J .

1. Vicksburg & Jackson , became part of Southern Ry
2. Clearfield & Jefferson , became Pennsylvania & North-western RR
3. Fernandina & Jacksonville , became Florida Central & Peninsular RR
4. Fort Wayne & Jackson , became part of LS&MS RR

That is all I can find , Pat.

I like that Ft W & Jackson, as the photo was taken on the Nickel Plate. The car likely being loaded with fruit baskets from the C M Oviatt works at what was then Dover Township but eventually Bay Village, Ohio. The G&J would be the next best candidate, but the back half of a G does not come out as well as the W.
