Yes they are indeed hollow. Really in todays environment just about anything can be reproduced with enough dollars.

Here's the latest official video, made on September 27th & posted on October 4th:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgjvL44uT2o

Discussion centers on water piping, main rod & driver brake cylinder; removed sand pipes & hoses are shown as are various other parts in seemingly immaculate condition. At the end of the video, 4 other members of the UP steam crew make a brief appearance.

Another official video was posted today showing progress through October 2nd:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZZQgveAi20

This video centers on the Timken roller bearings on the centipede tender (there are fourteen such bearings). The covers are being removed and new grease is being inserted; however, Mr. Dickens states that some of the old grease is in "good shape...like a time capsule...no water whatsoever."

Dickens also mentions that "special roller bearing grease" is being used on the 4014; he also shows eight, 400 lb barrels containing roller bearing lube, the same kind used by UP on 844 and 3985.

Wow, I'm quite amazed at the condition of the components they've disassembled so far. 51 years in a more-or-less dry climate appear to have been worth it. At this point it looks like the decision to pick #4014 over one of the other Big Boys was a good one.

There should not be anything "special" about the lube.

Timken has for years recommended 85W140EP oil for oil-lubricated steam locomotive roller bearings (this would be the driver boxes on 844, 3985 and 4014), which is readily available at most any distributor. The "EP" stands for Extreme Pressure.

The grease lubricated roller bearings (engine and trailing trucks and tender) use a standard railroad roller bearing grease.

I agree, 50+ years and things look great, that is really good to hear.

The use of social media is a telltale of the present age in which we live. Some organizations are using it well and others not so much.

You can watch the move across the parking lot here, Trains is currently streaming video:

So far so good, but it's a tight curve for such a huge beast!
