I'm guessing someone on the repatriation staff isn't a Conrail fan.

Heck, she doesn't look much different from the old warrior that still services my workplace daily:

I've heard the unit is now operational again. Any truth to it?

It is able to move under it's own power and is sometimes used as our shop switcher. At this present time it is not slated for revenue service.

I doubt that PRL/CR 7554 is ex-NYC, since no NYC GP9's had dynamic brakes. It's remotely possible that CR installed them during the unit's rebuild to a GP10, but not likely.

I stumbled on the saga of the salvation of DL&W 959 by pure chance this week and was electrified, because I knew I had a picture of the locomotive unlike anything else that exists. That was the locomotive from which my grandfather--engineer Eugene Vahey of Kingston, Pennsylvania--retired in the summer of 1955 after 53 years of railroading. This picture of his grandchildren (that's me in the goofy shorts outfit on the left) was taken just after he had swung down from the cab for the last time. Believe it or not, we also have home video of this event.

Can anyone tell me what the status of the restoration is? I think I can speak for my siblings and cousins in saying that we would be pleased to donate both photo and film to a permanent exhibit about the 959 at Steamtown or a similar site.

FWIW, ex-NH GP-9- 1 of 30.

Built with dynamic brakes, fyi-and steam generator.

It's quite likely that, in the course of its rebuild from GP-9 to GP-10, that the hood got swapped from another locomotive. I recall seeing an ex-NYC SW-8 that was overhauled at Juniata and received a cab from a PRR SW with those distinctive PRR marker lights.

From the files ...

Conrail Power Part III, Printed in Rails Northeast Vol. 7, No. 6, Issue 59 at P. 38, listed Conrail GP8 5460 as being assigned to Scranton.

That picture is just so damn cool.

Goofy shorts and all.

What a wonderful image to have. Imagine what he saw in 53 years of railroading. Brooks
Hogs, Camelbacks, Poconos, FM Trainmasters, E's, F's...

I love the bow tie on your grandfather-in some ways I think it conveyed his sense of pride and professionalism.

Thanks for sharing that.

BTW, I think I remember Mulderigs in my schools. Any relatives move to Mountaintop?
