Everett Steam Engine(s) update /WMSR

What ever happened to...

Yup, they are still here, undergoing a slow but on-going restoration
at the Western Maryland Scenic.

I am talking about Everett's two steam engines currently undergoing
restoration to operation to run at Everett, PA just South of Altoona, PA.

The first to return to service and furthest along, is 2-6-0 Middletown
& New Jersey (Bath & Hammondsport) #11. Don't be too surprised to see
this engine back in steam in 2014!

The second is 2-8-0 #38, Huntingdon & Broad Top Mountain. This engine
actually ran at Gettysburg. It ended up at the Knox and Kane (did it ever
run there?), but was burned in an arson fire. (Anyone know why Gettysburg
sold the engine to the Knox and Kane?)

If I recall correctly, 2-6-0 #11 was the first engine considered and purchased
by Everett to supplement their diesel powered excursions. No. 38 was too good
to pass up at auction (Knox and Kane) and was purchased. The great news, as
I hear it, is that Everett is interested - still - with BOTH.

Work progresses - though, as always, they'll be done, y'know, when they
are done. And if WMSR irons out all the details, restoration of C&O 2-6-6-2
#1309 might alter the schedule, though #11's return looks very promising.

I just find it awesome that these two girls who were part of the pioneering train museum "Rail City" are back under common ownership. Very cool, Mr. Maples. Rob

The 38 was used on the initial Knox, Kane & Kinzua run in either 1988 or 1989--forget which year. The 1984 date on the picture is way too early. That said, I'm not sure if it ever ran once the 1658/58 arrived in 1990. If it ran, it certainly didn't run much after the SY came on scene, and I'm not sure it ever operated below Kane either. From my understanding, the first runs had diesels on the lower segment between Marienville and Kane. The engine was in pretty rough shape by 1990. The K&K was a Cornell operation, just like Gettysburg. The 38 just got moved up from Gettysburg once the new operation was started. With the 76 and 3254 at Gettysburg, they certainly didn't need a 3rd operable engine there. Apparently, there was some amount of work done to it. People up with the K&K were mentioning that the hopeful revival of the railroad would have had the 38 operating. Of course, the engine house fire put an end to all of that. Kevin

A little OT, but what is the status on the WM GP9 in the last 2 pictures? Is there any ETA to when that will be repainted?

Kevin I'd hope that Western PA wouldn't have that much green and wildflowers growing around the ground in December (date on the link says 12/31/84)....lol

Besides the 38 and the SY, there was a third locomotive in the auction at Knox and Kane. If anyone knows generally or specifically what happened to the moderately sized live-steam parade locomotive, I would be very glad to know, either here or via PM. Thanks, O.

I believe that parade locomotive is on display near Lantz's Corners.
