Found a picture taken by John Hill of what I believe is the #143 Sierra Nevada in Eureka, CA, in July 1985: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1109939 (John Hill photo)

For comparison, here's the #143 in Houston in August 1970: http://coastdaylight.com/sierra_nevada.jpg (Jim Lancaster photo)

built 1914 as EP&SW coach 1053 and rebuilt to SP-143 in 1929
SP floor plan drawing no. 1005 (I have a reduced copy of floor plan 1003 for cars 142 and 143; also a full-size copy of 1003 for only car 142)

From a 1959 SP list:
SP-143 assigned to Asst Gen Manager
Waukesha powered air conditioning system
equipped with radio-telephone equipment

Does anybody know of any photographs of the #143 Sierra Nevada at the museum? Thanks in advance!

This car, SP 112, may have become SPMW 7077 in more recent years, painted in Daylight-paint. Below are a few links to both SP 112 and 7077 (I believe that the 7077 is now a part of the Union Pacific Historical Collection)...

Update 1/30/2015:

While looking through Bytown Railway Society's Canadian Trackside Guide, I found the recent status/location of SP #112:

Sold at an unknown date to the British Columbia Chapter NRHS and located with the Chapter's other equipment inside Woodward's Warehouse in New Westminster (a suburb of Vancouver). The British Columbia Chapter came up in a thread awhile back, as they were facing the possibility of having to move all of their equipment out of the warehouse. I don't know what became of that, so the status/location of SP #112 (and other Chapter cars) might have recently changed.

Concerning the SP#107,their is a good article in the July/August 1988, issue of Private Varnish Magazine. I worked for the California Lawyer at the time, and did the cover shot of the car going over the Colfax Trestle in Calif. It contains a floor plan of the car at the time, and an Original Pullman builders photo, when it was delivered to the San Joaquin & Eastern, on September 20,1916. Lettered for the SJ&E. (Photo is from the Smithsonian Institute Collection),Quite extensive article, this should help. Copies of the July/August 1988 issues, can still be had by contacting Private Varnish Magazine. OT Local

An Update:

SP #106, which was reported earlier in this thread as being owned by the Tri-City & Olympia Railroad (TCRY) and located in Richland, WA (one of the Tri-Cities), is currently posted for sale on Sterling Rail's website.

However, due to some other information I have come across, I believe the Sterling Rail listing is out-of-date by a few months.

Pictures of the #106 now have it being owned by the California Northern (related to the Arizona & California, formerly RailAmerica, now G&W) and located in Napa Junction, CA.

#106 in Napa Junction, CA, in November 2013: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3708516 (Jamie West photo)

Another Update:

Well, apparently, whatever the case was with the #106 being moved down to California didn't pan out, as the car is now back on the Tri-City & Olympia (as of August 2014). The photographer notes that the #106 was to be used by the Mare Island Rail Service, but obviously plans changed. What's interesting is that the #106 is listed for sale on the TCRY website for $625,000.

An Addition:

I noticed that Stan Garner's #800xxx-series listings included a T&NO business car which I had overlooked:

Built by Pullman in 1930 as T&NO #998 San Antonio (3rd)*, sold (when??) to unknown party as VAP #101 (#800054).

*Names were used on multiple business cars, including San Antonio, which was applied to at least 2 other T&NO cars (the #994 and the #981); I don't know exactly when the #998 carried this name.

I checked the T&NO passenger car diagram folio of February 1947, which does not list a #998! Hmm...was the #998 sold at an early date or is Stan Garner's list in error and the "VAP #101" is actually one of the other T&NO business cars? Perhaps 1 of the 2 cars I mentioned above which also carried the name San Antonio?

Regarding those 2 cars, the #981 was transferred to SP #125 Coast in 1959, then to MofW in 1961, and is now owned by the Reichholds and located in Jamestown, CA. The #994 was transferred to MofW in 1957 and was sold to Houston Compressed Steel in 1962.

On the other hand, if #998 was/is the actual number of this car, does anybody have more info? If the car was already sold and therefore not on the roster as of 1947, then maybe the date of 1930 was not when the car was originally built, but the date of a major rebuild.

The #143 Sierra Nevada is currently listed for sale on Ozark Mountain Railcar's website. The listing was posted on February 3rd of this year: http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/detail.asp?id=1713&n=Southern-Pacific-Business-Car-quotSierra-Nevadaquot-NEW

The listing incorrectly lists that the #143 was built by Pullman in 1914 as EP&SW 81 seat coach #675, later SP #1053. It was actually #676 to #1053; the #675 became SP #1052, which was rebuilt in 1929* to business car #142 Santa Barbara, which is now in Santa Barbara.

*Same conversion year as the #143.

Yes, that is the #133. The windows match, and the following info was posted back on page #1:

SP 151 (Pine Bluff) was moved from Arcadia CA in Feb. 2010 in anticipation of the rebuilding of the former Santa Fe 2nd District into the Gold Line Foothill Extension. Pine Bluff and a boxcar that had been used as a movie "prop" were inspected and fitted with new air brake hoses. Not sure where the boxcar went, but Pine Bluff went to Monad Railway Equipment in La Mirada (west of Fullerton) CA. It had been vandalized, with broken windows--not sure how much damage was caused.

Here's a photo taken 11 Feb 2010, just before it left Arcadia. This scene looks completely different now, with the double-track approach ramp for the Santa Anita Ave. bridge now covering the spot where I was standing.

In regards to SP 112 the Bytown Railway Society's Canadian Trackside Guide 2004 edition lists this car as formerly being SP 2914. Was anything determined as to what is going on with the British Columbia Chapter, NRHS, equipment???

As of Wednesday, May 24, I was told that I now am the owner of Former SP business car #127. It's sitting in a yard about 1/2 mile from live rail. I have pic's of it; and some of in the SP silver with large stripe on the top; and some have the r,w,b Amtrak stripe on the car.

The couplers are E; and the wheels are I'm told Oil bearings (they have an oil hose going to the cap of the bearings (are these sleeve?). The outside has peeling paint; and the inside needs a whooping huge cleaning. All original furniture seems to be in it. The wood looks a little dry, but either liquid gold or a good brand of polish should fix that. The electrical has been altered. some is 110v. ac and some is not. Besides the couplers and possibly bearings (trucks), I'm sure I'll have to upgrade the plumbing and kitchenette in it. I understand that there is a little outside metal to be fixed; and I know that things like hte marker light lenses are missing. Due to 2 major surgeries last year I had cut my concert productions, but with the obvious expenses I'll have to turn this car into a luxury mainline car, railcar. Whether I'm takng it to Rapid City, CA or someplace on S. Oregon, I have not decided yet.
