I posted this over on the Narrow Gauge Railroad Discussion Forum (NGDF) and thought that I would also share it here.

I have a Southern Pacific Rules and Regulations dated January 1, 1898. After I obtained it about a year ago, I found the short section in it about operating a Baker Heater was most interesting.

I scanned the two double pages and produced this PDF of it:

technical advance over the stove in the corner, now you know where steam heat comes from to heat passenger trains. That took the car stove out, and probably a labor saver (again). Keeping tabs on several car heaters like this and a lot of cars on a passenger train and overnight service would make the car stove become the plate juggler on sticks on Ed Sullivan.
