After languishing in the Hawaiian Railway Society's (HRS) Ewa Yard for 37 years ex-NAD (Naval Ammunition Depot) No. 10, 11 or 12, we don't know which, was moved into the maintenance shed for evaluation on 1 Feb 2011. USN 65-00174, the number she received ca. 1960, had been cannibalized and vandalized while waiting for her "moment" and was in sad shape but not without potential. The "A" end engine was successfully started on 19 Feb 2011 and the decision reached to restore her to operation. Extensive body work was required as well as wiring and other mechanical work. The "B" end engine was started in Feb 2012 by the same gentleman who got the "A" end running the previous year. Today, with body work completed (with the exception of filling pits on the roof and replacing the drip rails) 65-00174 received her assembly coat of paint. The final coat will be dark machinery gray and she will be lettered U.S.N. 65-00174 in her ca. 1960 paint scheme. While she still needs side cab windows and number light repairs as well as finishing the roof the old 1944 warhorse is operational. More work will be required as she gets sorted out but it is planned that 65-00174 will return to service next Saturday, 12 October at the Hawaiian Railway Society's 43rd annual meeting. Photo will have to wait until tomorrow due to my using Windows 7 on this laptop.

Thanks for the update. Are photos available?

Jeff,

Is that also a fresh coat of paint on the GE 25 tonner 7750 to the left in the photo? If so do you have any photos?

Kevin,

7750 is wearing an old paint job and a totally incorrect one at that. We plan to return her to her correct black and add her last markings used by the Army.

Thanks Jeff. We are in the planning stages of repainting her sister 7751 within the next year or so and seeing her in that color had me curious as to a possible variation from the scheme she has worn for the past 20 or so years.

Any photos of the new paint job? And does this engine have Buda engines?

OK Jeff,

I want a tour of it when I come back over in late January (assuming we don't get furloughed again)

Steve,

65-00174 has her original Cummins HS engines. Some electrical problems have surfaced which we're working on before we give her the final darker gray paint job and lettering as she appeard in 1960.

Greg,

Looking forward to your visit. Nothing heard from West Loch.

I note that the Hawaiian Railway Society has 4 small diesels... a 25 ton GE, a couple of 45 ton locos and the 65 ton Whitcomb... all run... all are presentable...

They have 5 or 6 steam locomotives, currently none run, but they have reassembled the parts, and given them a coat of paint...

These guys are doing a nice job of preservation.

Congratulations,

Randy

They even have the Oahu 85 that used to run at Travel Town in the late 50s and very early 60s that was traded to the LK&P on Maui but never restored there.
