Digitizing old books has been discussed a lot here, in the context of railway archives and libraries. Well...

A municipal library in Texas has dispensed with books altogether. http://triblive.com/usworld/nation/5356 ... z2pShUsB6e

Note the large players involved, among others, 3M... http://ebook.3m.com/library/bibliotech/
These are books from top publishers with, presumably, legal departments. So clearly they have vanquished whatever copyright or other "you can't do that" legal issues may have existed in the minds of less forward thinking library stewards.

So golly, that rare book that exists only at one railway museum library in the U.S. might not only be viewable by many ... it might be SEARCHABLE. Because as every archivist knows, an artifact misfiled is lost to the collection, and relevant material that can't be found is lost to research.
