I'm understanding that Birmingham Rail and Locomotive brokered the sale of some now preserved tourist hauling steam locomotives during the period of time in the early 1960's. I would like see some of the ads that offered these locomotives for sale. Does anyone know where they would have appeared to reach potential buyers who were starting up tourist railroads?

Tom -

I seem to recall seeing such an ad from Birmingham Rail & Locomotive, but I can't recall the particulars. If you can get ahold of Tom Lawson, Jr., he could probably give you the particulars.

I believe one of the Rockton & Rion's (an industrial railroad in SC) 2-8-2's was acquired from Birmingham Rail & Locomotive in the early 60's, so their sales weren't just limited to tourist railways.

So in what publications would have BR&L advertised?

Probably Railway Age or other technical trade journals, assuming that they advertised at all. Back then, much more business was done face to face, so it may be that they relied more upon established contacts than print advertising.

That's where I got the weld-in cab and tender replacement panels for the last steamer I worked on. Also picked up some chrome appliqu├ęs and some fuzzy cab dice.
