Does anyone have info and/or pics about the C&O/CSX's Lexington Sub? I live in the Olive Hill area and was wondering if anyone had any 'hidden' information or pictures. Also if Ross Rowland happens to see this, did any steam excursions/trips that you ran go through Olive Hill/Lexington Sub?

It's defiantly a start, and much appreciated. I just wonder if someone has more pictures of the Olive Hill area. For strange reason, though I love the entire Lexington Sub, the Olive Hill/Carter-Ashland area is of really high intrest for me. Thanks for the pictures and info!

You may want to contact--and consider joining--the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Historical Society. It's a pretty active group, and has a huge archive file. Photos are available for sale from them, too. They've also published a stack of books on the C&O, and it's possible one of them may cover the Lexington Sub.

Although it's out of print, and potentially pricey, you may also want to acquire a book called "C&O Power," by Phil Shuster, Al Staufer, and Eugene Huddleston. First published by Al Staufer in 1965 but in print into the 1980s, this remains the best available book on the locomotives of the C&O up to that time. In addition to that, the late Eugene "Gene" Huddleston had several personal recollections of operations on parts of the C&O from his railfan trips in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and one of them was a recollection of the pusher operation to Mountain Top, which as I recall was in the Olive Hill area. There are some photos by Huddleston in that area as well.

I also plan on *trying* to create a historical society for Olive Hill. But being 16, in school, and little confidence doesn't help much. hehe.

Funny you should mention this line as our next DVD release will be "C&O's Lexington Subdivision" and I expect to release it in September. It will have coverage in Louisville, Frankfort, Lexington and the Ashland/Russell area. However, I don't think we have any scenes at Olive Hill. There is a lot of steam in this but also diesels as it covers action from the 1940's-1971 (pre-Amtrak).

There is supposedly a cab ride video of this line out there that was taken right before they closed the line. I work down in Lexington back in the late 90's before CSX sold the line to Corman. There were a few guys left that worked that line. I've always been interested in the line as well.

I think you might have your lines mixed up, or I'm mixed up. The one were talking about ran from Ashland to Lexington, it was taken up in mid 1980's. As far as I know theres not a single rail left on the line. I could ne wrong. Apologies if I am.

I'm familiar. It was in the 80's the cut the line out. It is C&O zone 5 seniority district. The L&N side was still intact in town. The C&O shared track from Lexington into Louisville. That meant that they had a couple different union agreements in place. We had L&N KY engineers with Old road guys mixed with a few C&O guys who were left over after they shut the line down. I've always been intrigue with abandoned lines.

There is a book out with more information called abandoned lines of Ky.

If I remember correctly,the C&O/CSX removed all track from a short distance west of Ashland to the end of tracks at Lexington
Before this,C&O trains continued to Louisville on L&N track.

I think the reference to Corman must be in a different area.

That's what I was thinking. There is very small piece of the Lexingon Sub still active for a scrapping company, iirc. They took out some leftover track that ran into my county/Carter county about 8 years or so ago.
