I knew there was something about the repainted OSU shown in the picture that didn't look right (but in a good way).

As converted to coaches by the Budd Company for the PRR, the bedroom window and the roomette window closest to the center of the car were both roughly doubled in size, presumably to minimize what would otherwise have been at least several seats that would not have been next to a window.

It looks like the crew at MRLX went to the trouble to restore the original size sash to said bedroom and roomette windows. That is what now gives the car it's original 10-6 sleeper window spacing, at least on the L side of the car. A job well done, I say.

I wonder what the other side looks like?

Thanks, Tim, for the info on Ohio State University! Are the other two cars still owned by TVRM?

Topfuel, this image doesn't look right to me either. I know that the Roanoke Chapter's car (1489, Scioto County) retains the center windows, and it would be quite an undertaking to rework the window line.

Not of hijack the thread, but what passenger cars do the Roanoke Chapter own? I know they used to be a fixture on NS trips. I know the Mardi Gras and another coach were sold to Iowa Pacific and Monticello Railroad Museum, but what about the rest, and is there any chance of seeing them on excursions again?

southern154, there is a "close to complete" listing of the Roanoke Chapter's equipment on the Mechanical Department webpage https://www.facebook.com/roanokenrhs in the Photos (an album for each car).

A quick listing as follows:
  • RNRH 1407 (N&W MS class mail storage car / NS Steam Program Tool Car) is leased to TVRM and is in the 630's excursion train.
  • RNRH 537 (72 seat coach (P-3 class 58 seat coach converted to commuter service)) is currently leased to TVRM and is in use on their locals.
  • RNRH 512 (P-2 class 66 seat divided coach) is operable and is used at VMT for special events.
  • RNRH 1489 (S-1 class 10 - 6 sleeper converted to commuter service) is stored at VMT and will be going in for restoration soon.
  • RNRH 1148 (lunch counter diner) is at the Chapter's yard undergoing evaluation and possible restoration.
  • RNRH 538 (P-3 class 58 seat coach) is currently stored unserviceable at the Chapter's yard. It is on the list for future restoration.

I'm wondering a bit about recent photos I've seen of the "Ohio State University"... in some of them the windows match our 1489 as it is now, others seem to look more like the original 10-6 configuration...... just sayin'....

I was looking at this thread and realized that I posted the wrong photo of the car. I did some photoshop magic to the center windows and the reporting mark above the number. Attached is the real photo - sorry for any confusion, as I did not want/intend this to be mis-leading.

I should have some interior photos to share over the weekend. The car is currently in Bristol with the rest of the NS/TVRM consist and the 630.

Who else can't wait to see a few of these that all match behind the 611 leaving Roanoke??

At this time TVRM expects to retain the final two cars we acquired last year. Just to keep the historical record straight, we purchased all four cars from the Southwest Georgia Railroad Excursion Authority. We immediately resold one to the Roanoke Chapter and later decided to sell one to Mid America. With the 630 repairs out of the way and the work on the 4501 winding down, we want to get to work on our two cars pretty soon.

Tim, can you tell me which cars went where? Were they all ex-N&W 10-6 sleepers? I am familiar with these cars up to when they were acquired by the Southwest Georgia Railroad Excursion Authority and want to make sure I have the proper histories for each of the cars at their new operations.

Jerry--

TVRM is retaining two of the four N&W 10-6 cars acquired from SWGX: Virginia Polytechnic Institute (PRR #1480) and Emory & Henry College (PRR #1488)

TVRM sold the Scioto County (PRR #1489) to the Roanoke Chapter and Ohio State University (PRR #1498) to Mid-America, the car shown on page 2 as in service.

Just to keep track, at this point I'm still looking for the dispositions/whereabouts of eight cars:

N&W Wythe County/PRR #1494/PC #3236/NJT #3236/#5420

N&W University of Cincinnati/PRR #1499/PC #3241/Maryland DOT #1415/MARC #107

PRR #8273 Massillon Inn/#1501/PC #1501/NJT #1501/#5428

PRR #8278 Piqua Inn/#1515/PC #1515/NJT #1515/#5437

PRR #8280 Ravenna Inn/#1531/PC #1531/NJT #1531/#5418

PRR #8276 Olean Inn/#1532/PC #1532/NJT #1532/#5413

PRR #8282 Sewickley Inn/#1535/PC #1535/NJT #1535/#54xx

PRR #8248 Butler Inn/#1545/PC #1545/NJT #1545/#54xx

I show four N&W cars being on the SAM Shortline/Southwest Georgia RR Authority roster, with the cars being in good shape up to 2013.

SWGX 101:1 - ex-MARC, exx-MDOT 1401, exxx-PC 1480, exxx-PRR, nee-N&W Virginia Polytechnic Institute
SWGX 106 GA Veterans - ex-MDOT 1406, exx-PC 1485, exxx-PRR, nee-N&W Washington & Lee University
SWGX 108 Americus - ex-MARC, MDOT 1407, exx-PC 1486, exxx-PRR, nee-N&W Randolph Macon College
SWGX 111 Leslie - ex-MARC, exx-MDOT 1411, exx-PC 3232, exxx-PRR 1490, nee-N&W Augusta County

I found an earlier post that showed 1480 (Virginia Polytechnic Institute), 1488 (Emory & Henry College), 1489 (Scioto County), and 1498 (Ohio State University) as being acquired by TVRM, so where did these things see use or storage before being sold to TVRM?

I found an earlier post that listed the cars acquired by TVRM. 1480 (Virginia Polytechnic Institute) formerly was in use on the Western Maryland Scenic, 1488 (Emory & Henry College) sold to Ringling Bros., 1489 (Scioto County) unknown, and 1498 (Ohio State University), unkown, so where the last two see use or storage before being sold to TVRM?

Jerry--

The four cars that were sold to TVRM were leased by SWGX to Inland Lakes/Florida Rail Adventures, and had been stored in Mount Dora, FL, for a few years when TVRM acquired the cars last year.

As for the disposition of Emory & Henry College (PRR #1488) listed as MARC #109 and sold to Ringling Brothers, this was a confusion with PRR #8272 Marietta Inn/#1530/PC #1530/SEMTA #102, which was initially listed as also becoming MARC #109. The Marietta Inn was the car sold to Ringling Brothers (as RBBX #41314), while Emory & Henry College was sold to SWGX.

Regarding the use of Virginia Polytechnic Institute (PRR #1480) on the WMSR, this must have been after MARC retired the car from active Heritage Fleet use, but before the car was sold to SWGX.

In total, SWGX acquired twelve cars from MARC:

N&W Virginia Polytechnic Institute (PRR #1480/PC #1480/MDOT #1401/MARC #101) to SWGX #101 and leased to Inland Lakes/Florida Rail Adventures and sold to TVRM in 2013 (retained)

N&W Franklin County (PRR #1483/PC #1483/MDOT #1404/MARC #113) to SWGX #113

N&W Washington & Lee University (PRR #1485/PC #1485/MDOT #1406/MARC #106) to SWGX #106 Georgia Veterans

N&W Randolph Macon College (PRR #1486/PC #1486/MDOT #1407/MARC #108) to SWGX #108 Americus

N&W Emory & Henry College (PRR #1488/PC #1488/MDOT #1409/MARC #109) to SWGX #109 and leased to Inland Lakes/Florida Rail Adventures and sold to TVRM in 2013 (retained)

N&W Scioto County (PRR #1489/PC #3231/MDOT #1410/MARC #103) to SWGX #103 and leased to Inland Lakes/Florida Rail Adventures and sold to TVRM in 2013, which in turn sold the car to the Roanoke Chapter

N&W Augusta County (PRR #1490/PC #3232/MDOT #1411/MARC #111) to SWGX #111 Leslie

N&W Mingo County (PRR #1491/PC #3233/MDOT #1412/MARC #104) to SWGX #104

N&W Ohio State University (PRR #1498/PC #3240/MDOT #1414/MARC #105) to SWGX #105 and leased to Inland Lakes/Florida Rail Adventures and sold to TVRM in 2013, which in turn sold the car to Mid-America, restored to Tuscan Red as MRLX #1498

PRR #8274 New Castle Inn (#1539/PC #1539/MDOT #1512/MARC #151) to SWGX #151 Cordele

PRR #8271 Mansfield Inn (#1542/PC #1542/MDOT #1513/MARC #152) to SWGX #152 Archery

PRR #8252 Chester Inn/William Thaw (#1546/PC #1546/MDOT #1515/MARC #154) to SWGX #154 Plains
