I always consider a coffin heater to be the long, "bent over" style.

Although in a way, 4501's new heater is somewhat "buried" in the smokebox so it applies in theory?

Coffin was a brand name of a closed type FWH, similar to Elesco, but shaped so it could be buried in a notch in the front of the smokebox. This is apparently a Worthington SA with arrangements to bury the piping in the smokebox.

To my knowledge, Southern Railway Ps 4 #1409 was the only Southern locomotive to be equipped with a Coffin Feed Water Heater. Everything else was either an Elesco, Worthington, or not equipped with a FWH at all.

The Southern Class Ms Mikados were updated with Worthington S Type Feedwater Heaters, Size 3 1/2. Southern chose to install fairings over the heater box and heater to improve the appearance. It also appears that heater assembly is recessed slightly more than we chose to recess 4501's.

4501's system is an SA style. The head on the heater is different and we probably will not attempt to cover with heater with a fairing.

For those who've never seen the inside the smokebox of a Worthington Feedwater Heater equipped locomotive, the structure you see is the "heater box" which houses the heater and associated piping. This allows the heater assembly to be recessed into the smokebox and sealed off against steam and combustion by-products. The amount of recess is limited to allow removal of superheater units. With exhaust steam being captured from the front exhaust passages, there is no need for any piping inside the smokebox.

The pictures provided by Steve give a good view of what you won't see once the jacket is applied. There's a lot of stuff hidden! You've got steam lines to the blower, the hot water pump, feedwater heater to the cold water pump, air compressor, stoker, etc.
