Today we began the process of moving this lovely 1895 ex New York Central and Saratoga and Encampment caboose to the Grand Encampment museum in Encampment Wyoming.
Today involved measuring and checking structural integrity...the only issue being a bad west end beam (surprise surprise look at the photos of my UP 2516) She has truss rods and beams with the side bearings still in place underneath. inside the ceiling height is strikingly low compared with a CA. We will build a custom transport frame that will sit inside the trucks and give the needed support for years to come.

Check out the trusses in the building adjoining the caboose they appear to be made of freight car parts !

She looks quite well preserved considering her age. Do you have trucks and any plans for air system?

It's just amazing where cars end up.

As usual for you, a remarkable find. . .fascinating to see the different trucks under the car when in service (these may have not been the NYC trucks, but who knows).

I recall you were going to contact a museum in the east that had a similar NYC car. Out of curiosity, what were they able to tell you, and how did it fit into whatever you have also found out about this one?

Yes the folks at Danbury think its NYC like theirs. I am told that NYC would stamp the number of the caboose into the frame underneath so we may well find a identifying mark somewhere. We will move the caboose to the museum for static restoration.

Thanks for the response, and good luck on the restoration, and on finding the car's identity!

Mike -

Well, I'm not convinced she is a former New York Central caboose, but she is certainly an interesting find and I'm extremely glad you are going to preserve and eventually restore her.
