Residing was done at Roanoke Shops, trucks overhauled (without traction motors) at Altoona. Painting is being done at Chattanooga. This is strictly an exterior cosmetic restoration, much like the one done on N&W SD45 # 1776. Don't expect to see her on the front of an NS excursion or OCS |

Even though it is a cosmetic restoration only, this engine will look great over at Spencer and at VMT on display near SD45 #1776. Far better than slowly dissolving into iron oxide. Alan |

Gary, The linked photo of 1009 sitting without side sheeting in the yard has a note at the bottom that for now, the other E8 former RF&P, still sits in the yard. Alan, all of the "old" stuff stored in the middle of the Roanoke yard is part of the VMT collection. It was moved off site by previous VMT management because of being "eyesores" . Over the past few years some of it has been moved back or de-accessed. We are hoping to stabilize more in the near future, maybe "cocooning" some pieces. Space is an issue both at the Museum and at 9th St. The RF&P E is on the list for future restoration. The Museum is also out of covered display space for equipment that is restored, a very common problem. I expect that at least 4 pieces of equipment will have exterior restorations finished this year besides the 1009, with at least 2 having interiors finished also. By the way, if anyone wants an N&W wreck derrick, let us know, we have too many of them. |

It is on the deaccession list, and available to other preservation groups at what I consider to be a very reasonable price range (I am not authorized to negotiate or reveal confidential information, however I do know what has been offered on the engine). A couple of groups have made offers on the locomotive, but none have come up with the funding yet. I am not aware of any binding offers or options at this time. It would be nice to see this unit find a good financially responsible home in the Northeast where it belongs |

We here at Conrail Historical would love to have it but with 3 other projects on full swing, we don't have the available funds. A couple questions though... 1) is the crank shaft ok? These units were notorious for cracking the shaft. 2) how complete is it under the hood? Thanks! Russ Swinnerton CRHS VP |

I once inspected that EMD SDP45. The engine is not complete, missing the turbo, I do not know about the crankshaft. The locomotive is also missing the air compressor and the long shaft from the engine to the air compressor was cut when the compressor was removed. The main alternator is missing, the windows are all missing and open to the weather, which has resulted in a rotten cab interior. There are no traction motors and the axles were not greased, so to run it would need combos. The locomotive has also been unable to pass any air test. |

Not sure why being 'not complete' makes this unit any less/more suitable for preservation ? FWIW, the as-built 20 cylinder SD or SDP45 is a fairly rare bird. And besides-why does it NEED to run ? Dave |
