Bummer. I was hoping nobody else would notice, so I could win it for $50 and (possibly) be able to afford to move it...

Here's a summary of the auctions so far:
  1. March 5, 2014: Auction disappeared shortly before it was scheduled to end
  2. June 5, 2014: Sold for $26,0000, then unit (briefly) showed up on Sterling Rail for $44,000 with the stipulation that had to be moved immediately.
  3. July 4, 2014: Sold for $20,500.
  4. Feb 2, 2015: Next try

The June buyer had some nerve. Just contract with Sterling to find a real buyer and pocket the difference. I wonder if they had to pay up and lost their stake when no one stepped up to actually move the unit.

Is SMS pretty much the only Baldwin user or are they floating around at industries and grain elevators?

An article about the auction: KUTV - Need a train? Prices start at $25

An excerpt:
Quote:
Dean Quada with Government Liquidation, the private company contracted to auction off the engine, says he would love to see this train rolling on the tracks again someday, but he says it is possible, someone might purchase it for other uses. “That's the idea, getting this piece of equipment into the hands of somebody who could use it,” says Quada.

He also says he’s taken calls from companies who are not in the train business. “They use these types of motors for ski lifts. They use these types of motors for dock cranes.” Someone may just purchase the item for scrap. “If I was to take this apart myself for scrap, I would defiantly harvest the thing for copper,” he said. But he admits, given the locomotive’s historical significance, he’d like to see it used for something more. “There is a scrap value to it, I just think there is more of an esthetic value to for me to it.”

He also says, getting the locomotive for only $25 is highly unlikely. The government sold the engine more than a year ago for $25,000 but the purchaser, was unable to get the train moved, even though he was given a year to do so.

The article also says the locomotive "weighs 80,000 tons."

Well, an 80,000 ton locomotive would not be easy to move. And, why the defiance about copper salvage?

Ya think they could get it right..........

The Baldwin S12 is now listed on Ozark Mountain Railcar, with an asking price of $35,000:

Only one North American railroad left that actively campaigns BLH diesels en masse. The Baldwin-Hamilton Co. (parts supplier) went out of business many years ago.

You have to love the description on the Ozark page. It stars off by saying it is in "original condition" and then goes on to mention it was rebuilt in the 1990's. Hard to have it both ways, unless the rebuild was more of a restoration to original condition.

I would love to have this locomotive for my shortline, and could write the check today. 3 issues with that however-

1. cost to move- you will have to crane load onto a drop well car, ship, then crane off.
2. it would almost be as bad as a steam locomotive when it came to finding parts, you will hardly find any. That leads to modifications or having to manufacture your own. $$$$$$$$$$$$
3. one simple breakdown could cause us to have a $11k + shipping paperweight.

Still, it would be awesome to use a 'complete' Baldwin, in 2015. I see an unspoken threat with the drastic price cut- next stop might be the scrap man.

Actually, you'd be better off with a small steam locomotive. Pretty much anything can be patched or made up new, although it may not be cheap, easy, or quick.

Current bidding has ended this time for $20,500. Anyone know who bought the old girl?
