Almost off-topic, but not quite: For the last several weeks, the AMC show "The Walking Dead" has had its characters following railroad tracks in Georgia somewhere south of Atlanta. Last week's episode featured a concrete coaling tower dated "1926". This week's episode (the season finale) was set in a mysterious location called "Terminus", apparently inhabited by a colony of people who've survived the zombie apocalypse. Maps shown in several episodes showed this to apparently be Macon, GA. The interesting thing is one of the buildings in the last episode appeared to be a roundhouse. A little research turned up this google map showing the filming locations. Apparently this episode was shot in the former Southern Pegram shops on the south side of Atlanta. It appears to be a pretty huge backshop complex. It's cool to see so much of it is left: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=20 ... 8bb4b8eae8 |

Terminus was the original name for Atlanta, as it is the Terminus of the Western and Atlantic Railroad of the State of Georgia. Back years ago, the W & A Railroad of the State of Georgia was often referred to as "The State Road". This differentiated the state owned railroad from the private Western and Atlantic Railroad Company. Prior to the first lease of the railroad in 1870, all railroad employees were also state employees. Both the Southern Railway and the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway maintained large shops at Atlanta. Pegram was the Southern facility and Hill was the NC facility. Other carriers such as the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic (later AB&C), Atlanta and West Point Route and the Savannah and Atlanta Railroad maintained smaller facilities. |

I guess I need to start checking that section of the site more often. |

Terminus is in fact Pegram Shops of the Southern Railway. The coaling tower you speak of is the Central of Georgia tower at Raymond, GA. They have been filming in the Griffin, Newnan, and Senoia areas. You may recognize some of the areas as many of the scenes from Fried Green Tomatoes with 290 were filmed in this same area. |
