Here's a picture of the #448 on the Cape Cod Central from last June: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3522687 (Ken Lankshear photo)

The repainting of #448 to IC colors was sometime between October and February, as the #448 was not yet Chocolate & Orange when photographed next to M&E's Birken on the Blue Ridge Special in mid-October: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3672355 (Ryan Stuart photo)

It was not repainted, it's vinyl. Still stainless underneath.

A correction or two and a bit more information.

I believe NYC 448 was originally built as a 44 seat diner... later becoming a 48 seat diner as it is today. I purchased the car late in 2008 and it was restored to Amtrak certification in New Orleans after sitting in New Orleans for many years. ( note the diagram where two tables of 2 became two tables of 4 )

Car initially operated in October 2009 ( first trip ) with SMLX 800612 reporting marks. Shortly after the number was changed to SMLX 800448.

Car was a bit unique in that it was a diner with a 1/4 vestibule.

Texas State Railroad equipment and other assets are still held by the Texas State Rail Authority, a bicounty Authority (Anderson and Cherokee Counties, TX) that took over property from the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife.

IP has brought in one of the full-length dome cars for two years now during the Polar Express period to provide additional first-class service, now that the interchange track with UP is reopened. The railroad is no longer effectively landlocked. TSRR's interchange is direct with the UP at the UP Palestine yard. This year had the rather amazing sight of #300 sitting at the UP yard inside the yard doing the switching move of the ex-ATSF full-dome.

Forgot to include these two cars:

IC 3DB-1C-1DR-club lounge General Jackson (P-S, Lot #6671, Plan #4101A, 1942, Panama Limited) to private ownership in Abita Springs, LA, along the former GM&O Shore Line District, acquired in 2012. The other IC car on the property was baggage-express #755 (Pullman, Lot #4616, 1921, IC Specification P57). Does anyone know if Iowa Pacific also acquired the #755??

General Jackson in Abita Springs: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1708304 (Michael Palmieri photo)

B&M 89 seat RDC-1 #6143 (Budd Lot #9681-161, 1955) to MBTA to Cape Cod Central (CCCR) #1001

#1001 in Hyannis in 2011: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2414572 (Michael Delage photo)

Carolina Southern Question:

In 2012, Iowa Pacific acquired three IC cars from CALA: club lounge observation #3320 Paducah, diner #4109 Auguste Choteau, and 4DB-4C-2DR sleeper Greenville (SLRG also acquired SOU chair #1066). CALA had three additional IC cars, either as Clifton Terminal (CTR) or Waccamaw Coast Line (WCLR): RPO (30')-express #403 (CTR)*, RPO-baggage #1879 (CTR), and 56 seat coach #2619 Gravier (WCLR). Did Iowa Pacific also acquire these three cars?? According to http://icrr.net, it is possible the #1879 and #2619 were scrapped in 2006; photographs show the #1879 was still in Chadbourn as of 2007, and the #406 was still in Clinton as of 2011.

*Jerry LaBoda notes that #403 at one point was Iowa Northern (IANR) #111.

#403 was originally 88 seat coach #2168 (Pullman, Lot #4406, Plan #6-B-90, 1916, IC Specification P113), and was converted in 1947.

#2619 Gravier (P-S, Lot #6766, Plan #7531, 1947) was damaged in the wreck at Tonti, IL, in 1971, and became MofW #100056 before being sold to W.S. Hale.

The whole Carolina Southern/Waccamaw Coast Line histories have always been confusing to me. I know this topic has been discussed on here before, but the conditions and locations of some of these cars are still unknown.

From what pictures I have found, CALA had two modernized SOU heavyweight coaches: 1066 which they named the "S.A. Beasley" and another with an unknown number named "L.L. Crawford." Both were sent to the Lancaster & Chester for restoration work in Lancaster, SC. Was the "L.L. Crawford" also acquired by Iowa Pacific? Does anyone know the real number of this car?

Here are a few photos of the "L.L. Crawford:" http://rrpicturearchives.net/rspicture.aspx?id=605551

Also, in another discussion, Gary Gray mentioned that Carolina Southern also owned SOU modernized heavyweights 1204 and 1205. Does this mean CALA had 4 modernized southern heavyweights at one time? If so, where are the 1204 and 1205 now?

Here is a link to that post: http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=32955&p=172293&hilit=1204+1205#p172293

CALA also had an unmodernized L&N heavyweight coach at one time. The last picture I saw of this car places it somewhere in Conway, SC rotting on the side of a road without trucks.

They actually had five coaches plus a dining car.

From a 1989 Waccamaw Excursions Roster:
1066 modernized coach they bought it from a museum start up in KY (I can't remember the name) who bought it from the TVRM bankruptcy sale.
1200 Coach This can't be right as the 1200 never left TVRM property although it was sold to Pete Clausen and it is now in the Smithsonian
1204 and 1205 modernized Jim Crow coaches from Roanoke Chapter NRHS
1207 modernized Jim Crown coach from Old Dominion Chapter NRHS
3164 Dining car

Rainier and the forum..

In regards to the General Jackson and 755 baggage car... About 3 years ago, someone broke into the baggage car and lit it on fire, which was coupled to the General Jackson. The fire destroyed the contents of the baggage car, and blistered the paint on the 755 and did no damage to the General Jackson.

I assisted the family in cleaning up the damage from the fire, and ultimately put a deal together for Iowa Pacific to buy both the 755 and the General Jackson.

Approximately 2-3 months ago, both cars were removed from their long term location in Abita Springs Louisiana and both were trucked to Colorado.

The owner of the cars purchased both directly from the Illinois Central and had them brought down from Chicago, and for a time had them stored at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal area. The family moved the car to Abita Springs and put a panel track in and there the cars sat for 30 plus years ( most of which were under a wooden shed ) ...

The GM&O was later abandoned next to the cars, and the neighborhood began to develop around them. The cars became an attractive nuisance for neighborhood kids which made the sale of the cars essential before the General Jackson was damaged.

The family preserved the cars by having the vision to cover them years ago. Without that effort, the cars would likely not have survived.

Hope this information helps a bit.

Wow, a lot going on here. A few notes:

The Glen Summitt was owned by MALX in Evansville, IN and was in Evansville when IP bought it.

IC 2619 went to The Station @ Cedar Yard in Charlotte, and I'm pretty sure has been re-purposed as re-bar now.

SOU 3164 was purchased by East Tennessee Rail Car Services and is used in the Secret City Scenic Excursion Train in Oak Ridge.

IC 403 is IANR owned and located still in Clinton, NC.

I'm pretty sure the WCLR roster of former Southern cars grew considerably beyond the roster Tim has provided us -- I'll see what I can dredge up.

The WCLR situation was "interesting". Gray Tuttle was a Southern Fan and spent his $$$ accordingly. Local Politics and personal life led to the disposition of the equipment. It went mostly to the aforementioned Station at Cedar Yard, and then partly to the former Mrs. Tuttle, partly to Carolina Southern, and a few pieces were retained by Mr. Tuttle and went to Clinton Terminal. At the time of the break up I want to say 3164 was the only car that came out rather than going one of the paths above.

There may be a lesson here. These many years later I'm guessing that less than 25% of the WCLR fleet survived and it was at the time one of if not the largest privately owned collections. Just saying......

Thanks, Junior, for the info on the TSR roster!

Does anyone have the numbers of the CRI&P cars? I checked the Rock Island Technical Society's disposition list, but I didn't find the info.

Thanks, sou2404, for the info on the CALA roster!

Thanks, Tim, for the info on the WCLR roster!
