Hi yall,

The pic referenced of the SLRG 2904 is not the IC2904 that W. S. HALE (more known as Bill Hale or just dad to me) owned. The IC 2904 that dad owned is at the City of Aikens Visitor Center and Train Museum. http://aikenrailroaddepot.org/about/ along with another car that dad owned, Friso cafe-loung 1506. How do I know it is the 2904? I was there the day dad took a grinder to the side of the car and ground through the many layers of paint to find the number. The 2904 was a harriman roof car as originally built.
Dad bought the Carbondale wreck train from the IC IN 86 or 87. It consited of the 2904, 2242 and 2619. He originally purchased a combine that was of Yazoo and Mississippi Valley heritage (I dont remember the number) but the Ic wouldnt release the car, so they gave him the 2619 (City of New Orleans, Gravier) instead. He worked to start a museum in Western KY but nothing ever panned out. So, the cars were sold off. 2619 went to Waccamaw Coastline, 2242 went to Shortline Enterprises, then to the Filmore and Western and 2904 went to a gentleman in Clarksville, Tn who wanted to start a diner. 2904 had a hole cut in one end where a nice stove was installed and a plate put over it. 2904 was the wreck train diner. 2904 was sold to Aieken a few years ago.

Dad bought Sou 1066 and 1200 from the bankruptcy sale at TVRM. 1200 never left the property. It had draft gear damage. 1066 and an Ic RPO that was the Fulton Ky bridge crew tool car were leased to the C&J RR in Hopkinsville, KY. When that operation folded(a story in itself...), the 1066 and 1200 were sold to Waccamaw Coastline and the IC RPO went to Shortline Enterprises. I think it is on the Filmore and Western also, now.

I hope this helps. I was in high school when all this happened. Dad passed away a few years ago and I dont know what happened to all the pictures we had. If ican find some I'll post them.

Thanks,

Stuart

Open Car # 70 - not sure - looks like former Pullman Observation

I found a photo of Texas State RR observation #70 on Flickr, and it does indeed appear to be a Pullman, but I can't identify the Plan, and it hasn't come up in the "Surviving Pullman Heavyweight" thread. Has anyone got info on this car? Jerry??

Could this be the IC 2619, Gravier? It looks like it..

Thanks, Stuart, for the link!

The link may not work on a desktop, so here's the story from 2010 the aerial photograph was attached to: http://www.wmbfnews.com/story/12665844/charlotte-train-station-evacuated-bomb-squad-called-out, the photograph is to the right of the article text, below the title. Click the picture once, and it will open as a shadowboxed window.

That red TSR obs car is an AT&SF car--- the channel side sill is a sure giveaway. Note the small kitchen windows; this is one of the café-lounge observations that AHM/Rivarossi made so many HO plastic models of.

Thank you Stuart for posting the information about the cars purchased by your dad. I have been trying to find out more information about the Frisco cafe-lounge 1506 that went to Aiken, SC. I have been able to find pictures of two different cars in Aiken, but the one I think is supposed to be 1506 doesn't resemble the car's modernized appearance at all. Can you shed any light on this?

Here is a picture from one of your earlier posts about 1506: http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=22074&p=95869&hilit=1506+frisco#p95869

Here is another picture post modernization: http://digitalcollections.missouristate.edu/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/FriscoTravel&CISOPTR=436&CISOBOX=1&REC=7

These two pictures are of a car at the Aiken depot that might be 1506:

http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2703992

Did they remove the turtleback roof and reconfigure the windows? If I am correct, 1506 would have been built by ACF and not Pullman.

Here is a picture of the other car at the depot which I think is IC 2904:

A couple of quick notes:

Yes, this is 1506: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPictur ... id=2675567
ACF built, less the modernized roof. Cast one piece, straight 5.5x10 trucks, BTW.

The 2242 and the Fulton RPO went to Boulder Scientific/CLPX/John Birmingham. We shipped them out to Fillmore & Western and they may have subsequently been sold to them, but John bought them from Bill Hale.

Yes, as ETA said, that's 1506 and it does look like the window line has been altered.. They removed the modernized roof, but surprisingly left the big dent in the roof on the kitchen end.. We're pretty sure that 1506 did a tour with Royal American Shows, also.

The 2904 has had the window line altered, also and had an open platform put on one end.

Both cars were pretty rough when they went to Aiken, so at least they survive..

ETA, yes the cars went to John, but I thought he had Shortline Enterprises.. My mistake.. It's been a long time since I've even thought about all of that.. I had wondered what had happened to some of the cars and it's good to know that they survived.

Thanks,

Stuart

You've got the two cars confused. The car in the Flicker Photo is indeed the Cafe-Obs #1511, ex Santa Fe, that is still in that form on the TSR and still numbered 1511....but at the other end of that same consist in the flicker photos, is the OPEN car #70 (photo below courtesy of TSR Facebook page) that appears to also be a former Pullman Obs Car of sorts - but NOT from the Santa Fe, as the Cafe Obs is.

TSR has 3 open cars:

#70 - unknown Pullman, #71 -former PRR P-70, and #72 - Former Erie "Stillwell" Coach.

John Birmingham / Boulder Scientific moved IC coach 2242 and the RPO from the Fillmore & Western to Colorado in 2005.

Both are now at the Hudson Terminal Railroad (also owned by John Birmingham) in Hudson Colorado. As of 2006, 2242 was complete and operational and the RPO (numberd SP 631 for use in a movie on the F&W) was sitting on shop trucks. Its trucks were in many pieces as part of a rebuild that started in California around 2000 and to my knowledge has not been completed.
