I've heard rumors that they have purchase at least two budd dome sleepers. One ex NP the other ex CB&Q.

Add to the list:

CN

5033, HW coach, from Upper Hudson River Railroad, Stored on Saratoga North Creek

5038, HW coach, Same as above

4970, HW coach, Same as above

Only one of these has seen any service since purchase. One was repainted yellow and lettered for the Adirondack Railway Company and used behind the Leviathan last summer. Not sure which one of the three it was.

NYC

344, LW Bag/coach (Aluminum), From Upper Hudson River Railroad (never restored), from private owner-once stored in Colonie NY, Stored on Saratoga North Creek

note: There are other cars stored on the property with these, but it is my understanding that they are privately owned.

Unknown car

At one point there was another CN Coach on the SLRG:

CN 5062, HW Coach, Ex Adirondack Scenic same number, Numbered RPCX 5062 when on the SLRG. I am not sure this is the original number as there is a CN 5062 preserved in Delson, QC

I did not see it on the list, and I have also not seen a photo of it for several years so it may have moved on to another operation.

I did some searching and found the identities of the two dome sleepers:

CB&Q #305/BN #1444/Amtrak #9210/Dirk Lenthe/Doug Ebert and Charles Barenfanger (owners of domes Sierra Hotel and Puget Sound). The #305 had been stored at Monad Railway Equipment, was moved to Salinas after Iowa Pacific made the down payment, and was moved east in December 2013 via Roseville, SLRG number unknown.

NP #312/#378/BN #1453/Amtrak #9223/Dirk Lenthe/Monad/Virginia City Rail Corp Theodore D. Judah. The #312 has already been painted in IC Chocolate & Orange, SLRG number unknown.

Both domes were part of the 1954 Budd order to equip the North Coast Limited with both dome sleepers and dome coaches (ten of each were ordered). CB&Q #304-#305, SP&S #306 (now ANSCO's California), and NP #307-#313 were built in Budd Lot #9669-141 to Plan #9535 with 4DB-4RM-4S. In 1957, NP decided an additional dome coach and dome sleeper were needed as protection cars, so NP #314 was built in Budd Lot #9669-210 (Plan #9535). Six of the cars (#304, #307-#308, #311-#312, and #314) were modified in 1967 to the Lounge in the Sky configuration, with two of the sections removed for buffet lounge space and renumbered to #380, #375-#376, #377-#378, and #379 respectively (Plan #9535A).

Beginning in 1958 and lasting every winter season until 1967, at least one (and as many as three) of the NCL dome sleepers per season were repainted into IC Chocolate & Orange and assigned to the Panama Limited, while IC 11DB sleepers from P-S Lot #6913 were repainted to Loewy Two-Tone Green and assigned to the NCL in return. This practice ended in 1967 when IC acquired the MP dome coaches.

Both #305 and #312 saw use on the Panama Limited in IC paint.

These cars did NOT have sections. Under the dome they had 4 Single Bedrooms -- no upper beds -- when built. The modification was to change two of the Single Bedrooms into the the buffet/bar space used by the attendant (no seating). The cars received tables in the dome to replace the regular seating.

Post subject:  Re: Iowa Pacific-San Luis & Rio Grande (SLRG) Passenger Cars

Iowa Pacific in February had several trial runs of a passenger service over the Stillwater Central Railroad between Sapulpa and Oklahoma City, known as the Eastern Flyer.

I was unsuccessful in finding any photos of the Eastern Flyer, so I resorted to searching for videos on YouTube in order to identify the cars used, all of which were in IC paint:

IC observation Pontchartrain Club

Santa Fe full dome (either #510, #511, or #554)

LIRR #3009A-#3009B (a guess, as it is the only LIRR set that I have noted as being painted in IC colors)

Budd diner. This was the myster car that turned up, and I have been unable to positively identify this car, as the videos I located were not of high enough quality (or too far back) to make out the number. If I were to make an educated guess, I'd say that it was an ex-NYC #4xx-series 50 seat diner (Budd Lot #9644-004)--the NYC had a particular style of roof vent cover on their lightweight cars that make them visually distinct from cars made for other lines. Does anyone know the identity of this car??

I'm pretty sure the diner in question would be former NYC 448. It had been restored to Amtk certification and then was on the market for several years. If I remember correctly Iowa Pacific purchased the car sometime last year to add to their Pullman Rail Journeys fleet.

I count a fleet of about 115 cars, not counting the TSRR cars, including 11 full length or 3/4 domes and six short domes. Pretty remarkable! I wonder if anyone's amassed such a collection of "heritage" cars since the unsuccessful Roaring Fork Railroad operation of the late '80s.

Thanks, Kevin, for the identity of NYC #448!

44 seat diner NYC #448 (Budd Lot #9624-023, 1947) to PC #4548 sold in 1969 to High Iron Company. The #448 served as the cafeteria car during the 30 day restoration of RDG #2101 in 1975. To Dean Levin as SMLX #800612 to SLRG #448.

Saw this car in Grand Central Terminal last year. Beautiful car, not sure when it was restored, but definitely a 1st class job. If I recall correctly, the employee on board said that the car was normally based on Cape Cod.
