New Haven 2019 was rolled out of Thomaston Shop on Sunday afternoon, May 4, 2014. Starting the diesel engine and testing the power circuits of the locomotive was the ostensible (and necessary) reason, but some pictures out in the spring sunlight were also necessary:

Pulling 2019 out, with NH 2002 (the "before" appearance) and U23B 2203:

The locomotive restoration project started on Saturday, January 4. Sunday marked 4 months of work to the day. Last small parts of the cab trim will be completed this week and 2019 will start the trip to Spencer by next weekend.

The RMNE crew was supplemented by some contractors: polishing the stainless steel grilles, installing the new glass portholes, headlight glass and number boards, and the finish painting was also contracted out. The grill polishing was done in about a week, saving valuable Museum volunteer time, and the glass installation was done by a local glass company because they have the skill to do it quickly and not break anything!

More photos to come soon.

What a beautiful restoration! Congratulations RMNE.
Just as an aside, what's the story on the other FL9 in the picture?

Richard; The RMNE has 3 FL9s. 2019 is the one going to Spencer, so she is getting the royal treatment. The others are 2002 and 2059. 2059 is the last F unit ever built. She is intact, but may never run again.

And a working air whistle! Will that be the only air whistle at Spencer?

That is a very sharp F unit. RMNE and its volunteers and contractors should be very proud of the end result. Very well done!

I was able to tour the Morrison-Knudsen locomotive rebuild facility in Boise, Idaho in about 1995 IIRC. One of the projects there was one of these FL9's so they have had several lives. Living my whole life in the West, it was the only time I've ever seen that livery in person and not a photo!

The other FL9 is #2002 - acquired at the same time as #2019.
It currently needs a new radiator, but until that problem cropped up it was serviceable.

Having 2 working FL-9s was nice, but 2 was a little overkill. Back around 2000, we did run both in our "you-run-em" programme. It was interesting with the guest student engineer going through both engine compartments to switch ends sort of a mechanical tunnel of love.

Thank you all for the kind words about 2019.

FL9 2002 needs one radiator section, batteries and a full 3-year air brake servicing. No need for the unit, so it stays stored. It does get attention: engine barred over from time to time and pre-lubed, crud-catching areas inside carbody cleaned out and drain holes kept open, etc.

The 6 M-K rebuilds for CDOT date to 1992-95. All 6 have been stored at New Haven since 2009 or so. They are deteriorating and will most likely be scrap candidates at this point. Plastic bags and duct tape do not protect exhaust stacks for very long.
