76. Lounge-barber shop-shower-dormitory #1343 (P-S, Lot #6849, Plan #7623, 1950) to Amtrak #3394 sold in 1982 to private ownership #800259 and named Red Rock, later (when??) to Austin Steam Train-Austin & Texas Central.

ATSF 1343 is no longer named "Red Rock". It carries only it's standard ATSF lettering. The barber shop is now the conductors office for the excursion train.
Photo was in 2009, but the car is still in weekly service in this appearance.

The #1575/#8116 was part of the Wide Track Diner in Pontiac, MI, which later closed, and the car was offered by the city to the SRI in Owosso; I don't know if any other parties showed interest/presented an offer. Does anybody know what happened to the #1575? Scrapped or sold? Thanks in advance!

These 1950 lunch counter diners are all pretty well accounted for, so I had to dust off my memory to remember some of the details of how the Fowler Packing (Fresno, CA area) car ended up in MI, of all places.

If I remember all this correctly (and I may not be) the car was purchased from Fowler Packing by an individual named Steve Baer, who had also purchased former Santa Fe biz car 33 around the same time. He put the 8116 into service in California as a privately owned lunch counter diner, back in the days when about all you had to do to run a PV on Amtrak was to "sort of" do a COT&S. I don't think Baer owned the car for more than a year or two when it was sold to Bill Wallace of Bananafish Tours for tour service in Mexico. But Wallace ended up selling it after using it very little or not at all. Not sure if he sold it directly to the outfit in Pontiac, or if it went thru a few more private owners before going to Pontiac. Some of the RYPN regulars may be able to fill in any blanks here.

I can't vouch for whether it was ultimately scrapped or not, but I seem to recall that no one stepped up to the plate to save the car and it died there on site in Pontiac.

I rode the Tex-Mex Express a few times - including the last run on Father's Day 1990 - and never saw any signs of anything except 4 coaches and the single 'club car' that had the HEP generator.
