Besides the #3198, the photographer uploaded shots of 4 other AT&SF cars on the WYCO, 2 of which had previously been identified as going from WYCO to Verde Canyon (chairs #3087 Laramie and #3107 Centennial, the name of which had not been mentioned yet), 1 which had been listed as going from the Maple Street Station Restaurant directly to Verde Canyon (club lounge #1395), and 1 which had been listed as located at the Emmett Kelly Museum in Sedan, KS (baggage coach #3493, which I'm assuming also went to Verde Canyon with the other 4 cars).

All previous mentions of these cars followed by the links to these photos are included below.

Club Lounge #1395:

#1395 sold in 1968 to Champlin Realty-Maple Street Station Restaurant, later (when??) to Verde Canyon RR (Clarkdale, AZ). Does anyone know the VCRR number of this car??

1. 52 seat chair #3087 (Budd, Lot #977, 1937) to NJT 82 seat commuter coach #3087 (1969) to Verde Canyon Railroad and named Laramie (1989). The VCRR renumbered this chair--does anyone know the current number??

My recollection (based on speculation, and possibly quite false) was that the "Laramie" and the other car seen on that siding in that photo both arrived from the Wyoming & Colorado along with the former Alaska RR FP7's, 1512 and 1510, purchased from MDT. I seem to remember both cars having stickers (visible next to the vestibules in the picture) with remains of the Wyoming & Colorado logo. I remember from a visit a while back that both cars were shoved off on that or another siding in "storage," that both were fairly complete and intact inside

I am leaning towards the 3198 as well but one thing that muddies this discussion is that there were a total of seven coach observation cars that were rebuilt for mid-train operations, ATSF 3198 and 3199, built in 1938 and rebuilt to 2946 (1961) and 2947 (1960), and ATSF 3240 - 3244, which were built as parlor observation cars with three (3240, 3243 and 3244) being rebuilt to coach - smoker observation cars until they were rebuilt as mid-train coaches 2957 - 2959 in 1962, becoming NJDOT 2436 (1970) and AMTK 4460 and 4461 (1971) respectively. A couple of shots of AMTK 4461 shows that the same larger windows were used on the 1962 cars.

The other two (3241 and 3242) remained parlor observation cars until rebuilt to mid-train coaches. ATSF 3241 and 3242 were rebuilt in 1959 and became 2948 and 2949, later becoming NJDOT 2408 and 2409. Unfortunately I have not found shots of either of these two cars.

Does anyone know anything about the ATSF 1370 - 1378 series bar lounge - dorm that is shown in the city of Commerce, Ca., in the shot below? They are located off of 5945 S Malt Ave.

There are several cars actually on the two tracks, all stored behind chain link fence. Would like to find out more about them... if at all possible.

Jerry--

I don't know which one of the #137x-series cars this is. Maybe someone else has the answer.

After going through Randall's "Railway Passenger Car Annuals", I've compiled some additional dispositions for AT&SF cars sold to Amtrak. Most of these dispositions come from Volume 6 (1984), although several are from Volume 4 (1978/79). All changes are underlined, and when information is sourced from RPC Annual Volume 4, it is noted in green.

1. 36 seat diner #601 (P-S, Lot #6851, Plan #7625, 1950) to Amtrak #8070 retired in 1981 and stored at Beech Grove, later (when??) sold to Norman Holmes, located at Western Pacific RR Museum (Portola, CA).

2. 36 seat diner #602 to Amtrak #8071, seating increased to 48, retired in 1981 and sold to Marvin Robertson. Current disposition unknown.

3. 36 seat diner #603 to Amtrak #8072 retired in 1981 and sold to Naparano Iron & Metal Company (Newark, NJ).

4. 36 seat diner #606 to Amtrak #8075 retired in 1981 and sold to Naparano Iron & Metal.

5. 29 seat lounge-barber shop (later valet room)-shower-18 bunk dormitory #1339 (P-S, Lot #6849, Plan #7623, 1950) to Amtrak 31 seat buffet lounge-dormitory #3390 retired in 1981 and sold in 1982 to J.H. Haney. Current disposition unknown.

6. 29 seat lounge-barber shop (valet)-shower-dormitory #1340 to Amtrak buffet lounge-dormitory #3391 retired in 1981, listed as sold in 1982 to "The Reading Company". Seeing as how this was several years after the start of Conrail, I took this to mean a different company, perhaps the Reading & Northern? Current disposition unknown.

7. 29 seat lounge-barber shop (valet)-shower-dormitory #1341 to Amtrak buffet lounge-dormitory #3392 retired in 1981 and sold in 1982 to the Lake Charles Press. Current disposition unknown.

8. 29 seat lounge-barber shop (valet)-shower-dormitory #1342 to Amtrak buffet lounge-dormitory #3393 retired in 1981, listed as sold in 1982 to a B. Bishop, currently located in Luther, OK.

9. 29 seat lounge-barber shop (valet)-shower-dormitory #1343 to Amtrak buffet lounge-dormitory #3394 retired in 1981, listed as sold in 1982 to a C. Turner, now owned by the Austin Steam Train Association-Austin & Texas Central RR (#800259).

10. 29 seat lounge-barber shop (valet)-shower-dormitory #1344 to Amtrak buffet lounge-dormitory #3395 retired in 1981, listed as sold in 1982 to a W. Powell, now owned by the Gulf Coast Chapter NRHS-Houston RR Museum.

11. 51 seat club lounge-news stand-nurse #1349 (P-S, Lot #6734, Plan #7507, 1947) to Amtrak 48 seat buffet lounge #3351 retired in 1981, listed as sold in 1982 to a J. Gilliano, later to the Santa Maria Valley RR, damaged by fire (when??), acquired by the Golden Gate RR Museum as a parts source and later scrapped (199?). Was J. Gilliano a member of/owner of/partner in the Santa Maria Valley RR?

12. 27 seat club lounge-barber shop (later steward's room)-shower-dormitory #1378 Concho (P-S, Lot #6600, Plan #7427, 1940) to Amtrak club lounge-dormitory #3381 retired in 1981 and sold to John Singleton. Singleton was one of the partners in Hogtrain, Incorporated, along with Bill Eldridge. Was the Concho jointly owned by Singleton and Eldridge (doing business as [d.b.a.] Hogtrain), or just by Singleton? Current status unknown.

13. 30 seat buffet lounge-barber shop-shower-baggage 8 bunk dormitory #1385 San Pascal (Budd, Lot #978, 1937), rebuilt in 1959 to baggage-24 bunk dormitory, to Amtrak #1503 retired in 1981 and sold to Naparano Iron & Metal.

14. 31 seat club lounge-26 seat chair-news stand #1399 (Budd, Lot #994, 1938) to Amtrak #3821 retired in 1977, listed in "Streamliner Cars Vol. 2" as sold to the Boquet Movie Ranch, listed in "RY Passenger Car Annual Vol. 4" as sold to a F. Varcek. Was Varcek the owner of the Boquet Movie Ranch? Other cars listed in the "Streamliner Cars" volumes as sold to the BMR are listed in the RPC Annuals as sold to Varcek.

15. 36 seat diner #1477 (Budd, Lot #976, 1937) to Amtrak #8030, seating increased to 48, wrecked on 10/2/1979 on the eastbound #4 Southwest Limited at Lawrence, KS, sold in 1981 to E.V. Stadler for scrapping. Was Stadler a scrap dealer? There are several other AT&SF cars listed as sold to Stadler.

16. 36 seat diner #1481 to Amtrak #8033, seating increased to 48, retired in 1981 and sold to Naparano Iron & Metal.

17. 36 seat diner #1483 to Amtrak #8034, seating increased to 46, retired in 1981, listed as sold to a J. Baldwin, later to the Pacific Southwest RY Museum, wrecked in a runaway at Jacumba, CA (when??) and subsequently scrapped.

18. 48 seat diner #1486 (Budd, Lot #989, 1938) to Amtrak #8035 retired in 1981 and sold in 1983 to Excursion Lines. Current status unknown.

Did Alaska later purchase the #4836 from Amtrak, or did it remain under lease until 1989? Is the #1491 owned by Bob Moen or Charles Barthoid?

20. 36 seat diner #1492 to Amtrak #8037 retired in 1981 and sold to Kyle Railways, later resold to Midwest Travel Service (Yukon, OK) and named Soonerland II, now owned by the Oklahoma RY Museum (Oklahoma City), currently named OCU Star Express.

54. 44 seat chair #2915 to Amtrak #4520 retired in 1981 and sold to Naparano Iron & Metal.

55. 44 seat chair #2917 to Amtrak #4522 retired in 1981 and sold in 1982 to Excursion Lines, recently listed for sale on Ozark Mountain Railcar.

57. 44 seat chair #2922 to Amtrak #4526 retired in 1981 and sold in 1982 to Seattle & North Coast RR (SNCT). The Seattle & North Coast operated the isolated ex-MILW line between Port Townsend and Port Angeles on the north end of the Olympic Peninsula, with a connection made via carferry (really a barge) between Port Townsend and Seattle. Current status unknown.

58. 44 seat chair #2923 to Amtrak #4527 wrecked in May 1979 at Kennewick, WA. Randall lists the location as Pasco, and in the info for dome chair GN #1321/Amtrak #9461, Phil Dohmen lists the location as Kennewick. Pasco and Kennewick, along with Richland, make up the Tri-Cities, so understandably there is conflicting info regarding the exact location of this wreck. Other cars in this wreck were: dome #9461, steam generator #664 (ex-#1914, exx-GN #14, nee-F3B #430B), 56 seat chair #5690 (ex-NP #586), baggage #1118 (ex-#1208, exx-NP #411, nee-#222), Lewis & Clark Traveller's Rest #8353 (ex-NP #497), and 11DB sleeper #2267 Placid Vale (ex-UP #1508). Now the question is, seeing as how both trains were routed through the Tri-Cities at the time, was this the Empire Builder or the North Coast Hiawatha?

59. 44 seat chair #2927 to Amtrak #4530 retired in 1981 and sold in 1982 to Cascade RY. Current status unknown.

60. 44 seat chair #2929 to Amtrak #4532 retired in 1981 and listed as sold in 1982 to an M. Ervin. Current status unknown.

61. 44 seat chair #2930 to Amtrak #4533 retired in 1981 and sold to Steam Associates. Current status unknown.

63. 44 seat chair #2936 to Amtrak #4539 stored in 1976 and listed as used at the Barstow, CA station beginning in 1978. Previously listed as retired in 1977. Current status unknown.

64. 44 seat chair #2937 to Amtrak #4540 retired in 1981 and sold in 1983 to Excursion Lines, later acquired by the New Georgia RR, sold in 1993 to the Great Miami RR (FLSX), later stored on the Southwest Pennsylvania RR at Scottdale with a second FLSX ex-AT&SF lightweight chair which I have been unable to identify, burned by vandals on 9/4/2011. The second chair was not burned.

65. 44 seat chair #2939 to Amtrak #4542 retired in 1981 and listed as sold in 1982 to a Mr. Gonzales. Current status unknown.

66. 44 seat chair #2941 to Amtrak #4544 retired in 1981 and sold in 1983 to T.G. Jones (Peninsula, OH). Current status unknown.

68. 44 seat chair #2943 to Amtrak #4546 retired in 1981 and sold in 1983 to Naparano Iron & Metal.

69. 44 seat chair #2944 to Amtrak #4547 retired in 1979 and sold in 1981 to Marvin Robertson. Current status unknown.

70. 52 seat chair #3139 (Budd, Lot #96908, 1941) to Amtrak #5226 planned for reconfiguration to 60 seat coach #6034 in 1975, cancelled, retired in 1981 and sold to Naparano Iron & Metal.

71. 52 seat chair #3140 to Amtrak #5227 reconfigured in 1975 to 60 seat coach #6035 retired in 1981 and sold to Naparano Iron & Metal.

Current status unknown.

74. 52 seat chair #3159 to Amtrak #5231 planned for reconfiguration to 60 seat coach #6038 in 1975, cancelled, retired in 1981 and stored at Beech Grove, later (when??) sold to restaurant (Prescott, AZ). The restaurant later closed, car sat in storage, recently cut into thirds by local scrap company who planned to use it as office space. ADM IV, please correct me if I got the details wrong on this one.

75. 52 seat chair #3163 to Amtrak #5235 planned for reconfiguration to 60 seat coach #6042 in 1975, cancelled, retired in 1981 and listed as sold in 1982 to a G. McKinley, stored in Los Angeles, acquired in 2013 by the Austin Steam Train Association-Austin & Texas Central. I had previously surmised that the #5235 had been sold to Railway Service Industries, which is not listed for this car in either "Streamliner Cars Vol. 2" or any of the RPC Annuals.

77. 32 seat parlor 1 seat lounge observation #3243 (Budd, Lot #996, 3/1938) reconfigured in 6/1938 to 58 seat chair-2 seat smoker observation, seating reduced in 1947 to 36 chairs, rebuilt (with flat end) in 1962 to 44 seat chair #2958, to Amtrak #4460 retired in 1981 and sold to National Metals.

78. 32 seat parlor 1 seat lounge observation #3244, reconfigured in 6/1938 to 58 seat chair-2 seat smoker observation, seating reduced in 1947 to 36 chairs, rebuilt (with flat end) in 1962 to 44 seat chair #2959, to Amtrak #4461 retired in 1981 and stored at Beech Grove. Current status unknown.

79. 58 seat chair-2 seat smoker observation #3245 (Budd, Lot #96906, 1941) seating reduced in 1947 to 36 chairs, rebuilt (with flat end) in 1962 to 44 seat chair #2960, to Amtrak #4462 retired in 1981 and stored at Beech Grove, later (when??) sold to private ownership, located at the Pacific Southwest RY Museum (Campo, CA).

80. Baggage-24 bunk dormitory #3477 (P-S, Lot #6734, Plan #7506, 1947) received Hi-Level transition components in 1956, to Amtrak #9990 retired in 1981 and stored at Beech Grove. Current status unknown.

81. Baggage-24 bunk dormitory #3479 to Hi-Level transition in 1956, to Amtrak #9992 retired in 1981 and stored at Beech Grove, sold in 1983 to Mad River & NKP RR Museum (Bellevue, OH). Current status unknown.

82. Baggage dormitory-32 seat chair-news stand #3480 (Budd, Lot #990, 1938) reconfigured in 1941 to baggage dormitory, received Hi-Level transition components in 1956, to Amtrak #9993 retired in 1981 and stored at Beech Grove, sold in 1983 to Mad River & NKP, sold in 1985 to John Brigham and named Pegasus (#800248) (Plano, TX), sold (199?) to Cotton Belt RHS-Arkansas RR Museum (Pine Bluff).

83. Baggage dormitory-32 seat chair-news stand #3481 reconfigured in 1941 to baggage-dormitory, received Hi-Level transition components in 1956, to Amtrak #9994 retired in 1981 and listed as sold to a R. Hayes. Current status unknown.

84. Baggage 6 bunk dormitory-32 seat chair-news stand #3482 (P-S, Lot #6602, Plan #7429, 1940) reconfigured in 1950 to baggage dormitory, received Hi-Level transition components in 1956, to Amtrak #9995 retired in 1981 and stored at Beech Grove, sold in 1983 to Mad River & NKP, later (when??) acquired by the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum, then (when??) resold to private ownership #800235 (Logansport, OH), scrapped in Logansport (200?). I had previously noted that the #9995 was sold to the Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum, then to the Mad River & NKP, but RPC Annual Vol. 6 lists sale in 1983 to Mad River & NKP. I'm wondering if HRM acquired (or planned to acquire) the car while it was at Mad River, but that it never left Bellevue before the sale was cancelled (or HRM changed their minds) and the car was instead sold to a private owner, having not left the Buckeye State.

85. Baggage-express-messenger #3510 (Budd, Lot #9601-135, 1953) to Amtrak #1027, wrecked in 1978 (train, location, and date?), subsequently sold to Valley Metals for scrapping. Does anybody know where Valley Metals was located?

87. Sleeper Blue Mott (1948) to Amtrak #2505 retired in 1981 and sold in 1982 to Anbel Corporation. Does anybody know if this car went to Mexico, and if so, what numbers/names did it carry?

Steve Sandifer lists the Pine Dawn as located in Hornell, NY. The below photographs have the location listed as Cohocton, NY. I did find the Pine Dawn on Google Earth in Cohocton, along with dome chair T&P #200/MP #897/#597/IC #2212 (P-S, 1952) and parlor/snack bar-chair CB&Q #341 Silver Chair/Amtrak #3921 (Budd, 1949). In my notes, I had the Silver Chair as privately owned and located in Hodgkins, IL. What's interesting is that Phil Dohmen lists that the #2212 was also owned by Jon Clark and stored in Hornell, so does anyone know when these cars were moved to Cohocton?

These photos were all taken by Paige Miller on 11/29/2009.

All 3 of the cars stored in Cohocton are owned by Jon Clark. He also owns the former Erie depot in Cohocton near where the cars are stored. The 2212 and the Pine Dawn were moved to Cohocton from Arkport, NY (just a few miles north of Hornell) in March of 2008. The Silver Chair was moved from Hodgkins, IL to Cohocton in July of 2009.

MRLX #4700 is now at the Heart of Dixie RR Museum, and according to their website, the car was acquired in 2007 by Chooch & Warbucks, LLC. Did Chooch & Warbucks lease the #4700 to Mid America for operation, and was it during that time that the #4700 received MRLX reporting marks and the name Tohatchi?

The #4700 was later renamed from Tohatchi to Kayenta, although I don't know if the car was renamed before or after coming to Heart of Dixie.

I'm not sure of its history at Mid America. I do know MRLX 4700 was renamed Kayenta after it came to HOD. It was used in dinner train service operated by a partnership that included Chooch & Warbucks at HOD. The dinner train venture was ended in 2010 (I think) when the William Penn Diner Car was sent to Gateway Rail so its Amtrak Certified trucks could be leased to an identity the shall remain nameless. I think they made more money doing that than they would have operating the dinner train.

The Heart of Dixie Museum subsequently purchased the 4700 from Chooch & Warbucks in 2011. It is used in regular excursion service at the museum.

Thanks, Topfuel, for the info on Pine Dawn, #2212, and Silver Chair!

Thanks, Bill, for the info on the Kayenta and PRR #7137 William Penn! Does the Kayenta now carry HODX reporting marks or is it still marked MRLX?

They Kayenta still carries MRLX 4700. Since HOD will probably never interchange it the marks will probably stay that way.

Santa Fe Coach #2931 is also at HOD. It was used on the Southern Steam Excursions back in the day, but now is stationary as a party and meeting car. I would post a picture, but don't now how.

The Taos is now lettered as Great Lakes Rail Car (GTLX). Was/is the Taos owned by an individual or leasing group which utilized the MRLX reporting marks?

I realized I hadn't mentioned this unidentified car:

This is one of the 1947 P-S Plan #7503A 44 seat chairs, located at the Kankakee Railroad Museum (at the IC depot) as PPCX #450 and named City of Kankakee.

Photo taken by Earl C. Leatherberry on February 17th, 2011: https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5135/5527559268_8fe0534367_b.jpg

The museum's website states that this is one of the 1947 cars, but does not give the original AT&SF number. As pictures on the website show, one half of the car has been reconfigured as dining space, with wood paneling throughout, a full partition between the chair and dining sections, with an IC symbol etched in the glass of the partition door.

Museum's main page: http://www.kankakeerrmuseum.com/

Page for the ex-AT&SF chair: http://www.kankakeerrmuseum.com/pullman.htm

Does anybody know which of the 1947 chairs this is?

A clarification and an update:

In the "Al Chione Slides" thread, it was discussed that the #1340 was indeed sold to the Reading Company and stored at the shops in Reading.

Also in the Al Chione thread, Topfuel posted that the Picuris was acquired by Iowa Pacific.

#3240 is on Wallowa Union along with sister car #3241... the number listed on the page linked to below is in error...

It is noteworthy to mention that, like 3241, this car has an SSW emblem located adjacent to the vestibule... does anyone know if it and 3241 was used with SSW 819???

It hadn't dawned on me before, until I saw the above listing of former ATSF cars that had gone to PennCentral, but for a number of years in the late 70's/early '80's a stainless PC coach sat on a siding in Clinton, OH (Warwick Jct. on the B&O), South of Barberton, OH. My guess is that it was one of those ex-ATSF cars. To the best of my knowledge, it was scrapped there over 20 years ago. I know someone who might have photographed it, and I'll see if I can get a number at some point.
