Overview:

Car Builders:

The NYC ordered or acquired secondhand a total of 1,220 lightweight cars between 1938 and 1965, from five manufacturers.

P-S: 646
Budd: 296
AC&F: 153
StLCC: 100
Pressed Steel Car Co: 25

NYC Lots:

The NYC assigned each group of cars a four digit lot number*; specifically lightweight cars were assigned to lots between #2129 and #2265. For example, P-S prewar sleepers were assigned to lots #2210-#2226.

*Heavyweight cars were assigned both four and three digit lot numbers.

Subsidiaries:

Besides NYC, lightweight cars were also lettered for subsidiaries Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis (CCC&StL, commonly known as the Big Four) and Michigan Central (MC).

Sleepers:

NYC did not assign numbers to sleeping cars (both heavyweight and lightweight) until 1952, at which point sleepers currently on the roster were assigned five digit numbers in the #1xxxx-range. For example, the 31 Budd 22RM Harbor-Series sleepers were assigned numbers #10350-#10380.

Effective July 1st, 1958, NYC cancelled its operating contract with the Pullman Company, at which point all remaining sleepers were removed from Pullman lease.

Roster Organization:

To keeps things straightfoward, I've split the roster into prewar and postwar lightweights, and then by type.

Note on Car Dispositions:

Much of the info on pre-1980 car dispositions is taken from Randall's "Streamliner Cars" volumes, and in his introduction, Randall makes note that the 1968 Penn Central merger resulted in many of the car records being either incomplete or incorrect, so some confusion was inherent in the information that was available at the time Randall was conducting his research.

This state of records confusion is also apparent in the Pullman CCR database, particularly in regards to NYC sleepers that were sold for service in Mexico.

SCD at that time was still operating sleepers under Pullman contract, and as Pullman began processing paperwork for these ex-NYC sleepers, it was found that not all sleepers could be positively identified by their former Pullman-assigned names, so there are several instances of ex-NYC sleepers (backtracing from their Mexican names) that have multiple possible histories, although this appears to be more of a problem with heavyweight sleepers than with lightweights.

Part One: Prewar Lightweights:

Sleepers:

All prewar sleepers ordered by NYC were built by P-S.

I show Imperial Crown becoming IC Grenade and then owned in the 1970s by C. A. Rasmussen and being part of the Overland Rail Tours fleet and lettered as Grenade.

I recall when the car was being readied for painting when owned by Mr. Rasmussen.

Thanks, Brian, for the info on NYC Imperial Crown/IC Grenada! That section of the car's history was previously unknown.

Does anyone know who owned the Imperial Crown/Grenada after Craig Rasmussen and before Iowa Pacific?

You sure you don't mean heavyweights? I haven't seen any evidence that any subsidiary had lightweight cars (the P&LE cars were acquired from the L&N in 1970, as a Penn Central subsidiary, with one ex-C&O 52-seat coach being acquired from the Allegheny County Port Authority, date unknown), though this might have occurred... will have to do some checking...

According to the CCR database, lightweight sleepers were indeed sold to the Big Four and MC, but I don't know for certain if the cars were actually lettered as such. I'll cross reference cars noted as sold to MC or Big Four with available photos on Terry Link's website to check for said lettering.

My lack of sleep must be getting to me... I didn't even think about Tom's CCR file. I did check Terry's site and there is not any reference there about the cars being acquired by a subsidiary.

The lightweight sleepers listed as sold to either Big Four or MC represent a small fraction of the total number ordered by NYC, specifically all prewar examples of only one configuration: 10RM-5DB Cascade-Series sleepers:

Big Four is listed as owning 3: Cascade Channel, Cascade Springs, and Cascade Whirl.

MC is listed as owning 7: Cascade Crystals, Cascade Elf, Cascade Faun, Cascade Glade, Cascade Glen, Cascade Lane, and Cascade Rainbow.

Checking Terry Link's website, only one of these 10 cars, the Cascade Elf (#10050), has a photo available:

http://www.canadasouthern.com/caso/images/nyc-cascade-elf.jpg

I see no such lettering for MC, however, I'm wondering if the lettering was initially applied and later blanked over, as I'm guessing the photo is from a later date: note that the name has been crossed out, possibly right after or right before the car was sold to Edwards International in 1960.

The crossed out name and number indicates the car was retired, a common practice even today on many roads.

My thoughts exactly.

Hopefully an earlier photo of one of the 10 Cascade sleepers will turn up, confirming whether or not subsidiary lettering was ever applied.

Several other sources also say Grolandia. Mar de Groelandia is Spanish for Greenland Sea.

Would also suspect that the other conflicts in listings also lean towards Tom Madden's listings.

The Chicopee Falls, as far as I know, became the test car for NYC...PC....CR. While at Conrail, I was temporarily assigend to the test lab in Altoona. I was involved with testing locomotives and the wheel flange lubricators. As such, I spent a lot of time in that car. The emergency equipment in the hallway locker had Chicopee Falls engraved into the handles of the tools. One fellow from the lab had been with the NYC and the lab when it was in Cleveland and had been with the car all that time so I trusted that he knew what he was talking about.

After Conrail ended, I believe the car would up on NS.

Maybe someone knows the fate of the car.

It was quite an experiace to be riding in your own private car in freight service.
