There's some intriguing info buried in this article about how the trail came about: a property owner bought the entire RR to protect their own easement. Compare to other trails and property discussions.

For those unaware of the line's history, Steve Hepler did this exhaustive history as part of the Whippany Railway Museum website: http://www.whippanyrailwaymuseum.net/vi ... ge-railway

Several important items that I see:

1. The most important one is that this line was truly abandoned, and had been for some time. This is nothing like the trail activity going on in New York and some other places.

2. It took a long time to get this built even to this stage, and even with cooperative owners. People should not complain that we railroad backers take too long when you look at the timelines for the trail people.

3. In yet another example of the double standard we have to live under, NOBODY COMPLAINS that the trail was built with PUBLIC MONEY!

I'm not knocking what was done here. What I am pointing out is that we have to generate a real profit, which almost nobody else has to do. If we don't, we are called failures and told we should go away!

Indeed.

That trail is an example of socialist redistribution of wealth by the gummint, unless one agrees with it being built, then it is a wise use of government resources.

It's all about POV. And it is all bull. The trailies are good at it, the snowmobile trailies are masters of it.
