There are more reasons than geographic for collection decisions. Some large museums are very interested in providing the broadest variety of certain types of equipment from all sources.
I would prefer to see equipment in its proper context all else being equal. Many older museums are reaching the level of maturity where they are willing to release artifacts that don't answer needs of their interpretive missions to more appropriate homes, if qualified new homes can be found.
The sad situations are the owners that have the stuff and can't afford to preserve it properly, and still won't release it to those more reasonable and better equipped museums who will.
Dave
