Meanwhile, over in topic at the Railfanning forum, one in which I had to redact some personal insults, some useful information:

The correct facts are that 4 cars were bought by the UPRR, 2 by the State of NC and 7 went to individual private buyers.

Without delving into the issues surrounding the GBX and risking this thread devolving into a quagmire, can someone provide a little more detailed disposition information? Obvioulsy, private owners will remain private, but I'm curious as to what cars UP and NCDOT purchased. We have at least one poster here on RYPN who keeps track of passenger cars, and the information would be useful for that purpose.

I believe the UP actually bought 5 cars.

NCDOT did buy 2 as noted.

BNSF bought one.

WM Scenic bought one.

The others did go to various private owners/companies. I don't believe any of the remaining winning bidders got more than one car each.

One anonymous bidder (who was not in attendance) purchased the diner. A few rumors about who it might have been, but nothing confirmed.

As reported by Mike Palmieri in the AOE thread, several of the cars had not been tunneled:

#800246 Monterey (3DB crew dorm-lounge, exxxxxx-B&O 5DB sleeper buffet lounge blunt end observation #7501 Wawasee, nee-C&O #2507 Wolverine Club)

#800297 Istanbul (4SR-2BD sleeper, nee-SP 4DB-4C-2DR #9119)

#800301 Zurich (nee-UP lunch counter café lounge #5004)

#800668 Grand Canyon (11DB sleeper, nee-UP #1506 Placid Scene)

#800668 Grand Canyon (11DB sleeper, ex-UP #1506 Placid Scene.

These cars weren't tunneled, but due to the ridiculous asbestos abatement undertaken while the cars were in Denver, in general these cars were missing most if not all bedroom and hallway ceiling panels; ceiling and hallway light fixtures; upper berths; and some lower berth sofas. The missing parts for each car were nowhere to be found at the auction. Someone evidently bought a few containers full of parts a few months previous, and that may be where the parts ended up. Istanbul and Grand Canyon were also missing all the HEP and most if not all of the electrical locker components.

Anyone interested in the new ownership must write the auctioneer ( info@blackmonauctions.com) and request a list of the car buyers per the terms of our contract with Blackmon.

Thanks, Ross Rowland

"Is there a list of which cars went to which new owners?"

I doubt there will be a list made public of all the winning bidders. When I get a chance I can put together a list of which cars went to UP, BNSF, NCDOT, and WMSRR. It's not so easy to determine which private owners got which of the remaining cars because when they point to the winning bidder and say you're the high bidder on car so-and-so, unless you know who that guy is, or unless you go up to him afterword and say "who are you and what car did you get?", it's not as easy as you might think to know who got what.

Maybe individual car buyers (if they read RYPN) will step forth and ID themselves.

Thank you.

That is what I was interested in.

Here are the buyers, based on my notes. Not guaranteed to be accurate, but should be close.

I was in error on my previous post re the number of cars bought by the UP. Ross was correct, it looks like the UP bought the following 4 cars:

Rocky Mountain
Seattle
Vienna
Santa Fe

To NC DOT:

Charleston
Bar Harbor

To Western Maryland Scenic:

Monterey

To BNSF:

Monte Carlo

To absentee buyer:

Zurich

To persons affiliated with the Morristown and Erie RR:

Grand Canyon
Montreal
Paris

To persons affiliated with Genesee Valley Transportation:

Istanbul

I'll leave it to Ted to flesh out the histories and add these to his dispo list of former AOE cars.

I'll post any additions or corrections if they come available.

Some of the cars that were reconfigured after leaving Amtrak may have been tunneled in that process, and the new configurations may not be of the construction and materials that we were familiar with when they were in revenue railroad passenger service. SR may mean State Room, and not what was commonly called a Single Room.

In an earlier post, Mr. Rowland hinted that they might keep enough cars for a short 4 car train.
