Much better building than most park locos have had! I'd take it.

I don't think yours would fit....but if nothing else, Rick shows what a good scrounger can do on a limited budget if in an area where regulatory influences are not too difficult. It's just another shed in a steel mill where it is going up.

Its also not a permanent structure. Built on three I beams and resting on the ground, I can move it if need be.

I am really liking this two foot gauge stuff! Its like model railroading!

You know there are several other folks who come from out your way to the WW&F for work weekends... We can make sure you've caught the bug in its entirety :)

Enjoying your progress and updates!

Perhaps one of them could bring the WW&F crankpin lathe to Rick for a quick turn of the pins on the Ingot?

I'm seriously considering making an attempt to come to one of the work weekends.

While looking for something else, I ran into this, and thought it might be of interest on this page:

I haven't updated this thread in a long while, so I'll post a few photos to get everyone up to date on the restoration project.

The boiler is at JS Company in Middlefield, OH. It is scheduled to get into the shop for work before spring.

On the day the PRR Ore Shunter was delivered, we shipped out the frame to a heavy fab shop for repair work.

We were able to find the 58's saddle tank, which we initially moved to Carrie Furnaces for storage until it was brought to Youngstown this summer.

The sand boxes on the loco are placed in slots on the saddletank. There is a square box with another box placed inside. Kind of an odd arrangement. We have enough left of the old ones to remake the boxes.

These are the remains of the bottoms of two of the sand boxes. The one on the left had been left soaking in muriatic acid for a day. I use the acid to quickly remove large amounts of runs from heavily corroded items and in this great it works great to give me an idea of what the sand valve looks like as a pattern for the new ones.

Here are the only known photographs of the J&L Porters in operation.
If anyone has any photos of these locomotives, especially under Crown Metal Products ownership, I would be very interested in seeing them.

Rick -

In the very first entry that you made to this thread back in December of 2014, you stated that these locomotives were apparently "fueled in between switching moves from trackside piles of coal located in strategic areas." However, I noticed in the top photo of your most recent entry, of number 58 or 59 pictured with ingot cars, what appears to be a small trailing car; perhaps for a coal supply? Also, in the Porter ad, number 57 shows just the edge of what might be another trailing car. Have you possibly rethought the "trackside piles of coal" scenario?

Yes! At that time we had no photos of them in service at all, so that was an assumption.

Is it possible that one of those little tenders might be found somewhere? If not, might there be more photos or possibly even a drawing in the historical records?

Those tenders were ingot mold cars that had a box added to the top of it for coal. I have not found any drawings of anything related to J&L South Side Works and its highly doubtful that such drawings still exist.

I have built a small tender for the loco using an inverted coal box that came out of the Wheeling Labelle Nail Co. plant in Wheeling, WV. In these photos its sitting on a Carpenter Steel car, but will sit on a car with a longer frame when its fully complete. The coal space holds about 1/3 of a ton and there is room for two seat boxes. I think it approximates well the mill's penchant for building saddle tank loco tenders out of whatever they had laying around.
