Post subject:  Minnesota & Western Stea,m Engines on the Move

Today, the Porter 2-6-2T Coronet Phosphate #5 left Annandale, MN, with delivery in 10 degree below zero temps tomorrow morning at the Colfax Railroad Museum. When we left with #5, they were starting to load the M&StL 2-8-0 for shipment to Janesville MN. It should start out tomorrow for its new home. There are still 2 passenger cars, 2 cabooses, a tender, the Ia Central boxcar, and the RS shell to ship out. I'll try to get some pictures posted tomorrow after I thaw out.

Here's the arrival of Coronet Phosphate #5 at the Colfax Railroad Museum. We even got coverage from local TV station WQOW 18 as the lead news story for the evening. We found the smokebox front in 6 pieces, but have had it welded back together and it will go back on as soon as the subzero temperatures break. It was 4 degrees when the unloading took place this morning. Crane arrival to departure was 1 hour 20 minutes.

For info, the engine, as shown, was 62000 pounds. We had removed the saddletank, fuel tank, main rods, and asbestos which weighed about 6500 pounds. Manufacturer's stated weight was 90000 pounds.

Today must have been a good day for moving steam locomotives. We moved the 23" gauge Porter 0-4-0T J&L 58 to Youngstown today. Great that both moves went off without any complications.

Thanks for the photos of M&StL #471. Looks in better condition than I thought she might after her long outside storage. Also thanks for the photos taken at North Freedom and some of the engines there. The LS&I 2-8-0 is really in beautiful cosmetic shape! Certainly the best looking locomotive at Mid-Continent today, and privately owned! Maybe a new separate thread on LS&I 2-8-0's is in order! Number 22 deserves to lead such a discussion.
