Does this type of switch signal have a specific name? Where was it commonly used? What do the colors mean? The photos are from the Carroll Park and Western and the signal was on their 3 way stub switch and other switches.

That type of switch stand is commonly referred to as a Harp switch stand. The colored panel is the switch target and merely indicates the direction for which the switch is set. In the early days, the shape and color of switch targets could vary greatly. Some switch targets were designed to look like a hand pointing in the direction for which the switch was set. |

These are identical to the stands used by the East Broad Top Railroad. Since Bloomsburg is just 100 miles up the road from the EBT, and (going by your CP&W website) the CP&W was built during 1956-1964, and the EBT was dormant in 1956-1960, and the EBT had been converting to New Century machines, and new harp stands for stub switches seem unlikely to be available in that era... I'd guess they're second hand spares from the EBT. Based on the uniqueness of each one (feet splayed differently, different length feet, handles/latches installed in differing directions) and the lack of any manufacturer's marks, I had assumed these were hand made in the EBT shops. If anyone knows for sure if these are EBT-made or from a railroad supply company, I'd love to hear it. |

William - It is possible that the CP&W got them form the EBT. The CP&W had bought several narrow guage trucks from the EBT to convert some of their rolling stock to 4 foot guage and could of picked them up at the same time. |

Found this photo online of a switch at the EBT. Sure does look the same.
