Post subject:  Wreckers In Use

How many wreckers are still in use? As near as I can tell the BNSF has one or maybe two. The Union Pacific, Montana Rail Link and the Saint Mary's River may each have one. Any others?

A beautifully cared for Bangor and Aroostook wrecker, X127, remains at Derby Shops, indoors and under cover. It is painted up for the late MM&A RR. There is some question as to whether it will be retained or sold by the CM&Q Ry.

What is the CM&Q? Here is what I have on the X-127:

Industrial Brownhoist C/N 11108 150t Diesel 1941
US Navy Portsmouth, NH
Bangor & Aroostook RR #X127
Montreal, Maine & Atlantic RY #X127 2003
(in service 08-13)

Anybody know the navy number or when the B&A bought it?

X-127 might have been a steam crane, rebuilt as a Diesel crane. It's been around for some years, but I saw it last week, stored indoors at the Derby Shops, near Milo, Maine. It has an idler car, built from a pulpwood car, painted to match. It's quite possibly the nicest looking thing left on the property!

The last I heard, Indiana Box Car (IBCX) was using an old wrecker at their operation. I have no idea as to its heritage.

No longer in use, but one I found fascinating to study is at the RR Museum in Ogden Utah. It's ex-U.P. with a Vanderbilt tender. Maybe it's because I just like Vandy's.

The U.P. has a former Rio Grande Derrick (DRGW 028) in Grand Junction, Colorado. They use it for changing out traction motors and once in a rare moment for wreck work.

S/N 3874, last shown on the now defunct Cadillac & Lake City in Lake City, MI was cut up for scrap there c.1975. According to Joe Rogers, ex-C&LC employee, Penn Central declined to move the crane unless the boom was removed. The museum group interested in the crane elected not to jump through the PC hoops. I saw the only remnant, the cast counterweight, in Lake City post 1976.

Hi Guys;
I believe there is a pair of ex Amtrak wreckers on the Black River & Western, and one may still be in service. Anyone have the current status and details? Also, there was a diesel wrecker in use at least a few years ago at the US Coast Guard station in Galveston Texas, not sure of it's current status.

I have operated both machines. The first one was an LIRR crane that came out of Sunnyside (I believe) Off the top of my head the number 197 comes to mind... I am not sure where that came from. It came to us in faded Metro North colors I believe, and was repainted in the mid 1990s. It has a Detroit 6-110 prime mover and pneumatic controls. Of the 2 cranes, I liked operating this one more much more than the "Amtrak Crane", but the torque converter needed constant attention, adding oil, bleeding air off, particularly when it was running hot and heavy.

The Amtrak crane came with a nice idler car... I didn't really care for operating that crane. It came from 30th Street yard, Philly. I believe it still has the Amtrak number.

No clue when they were last run... I don't know who at BR&W is qualified on either machine.
