They were outraged, OUTRAGED that sex had happened aboard the railway carriage, said the parents on their way back to their hotel room.

Oh right, it's April 1.

Brings to mind the story from many years ago about one of the San Franciso Muni's streetcars or buses being used as a movie location for an XXX rated film shoot. Not sure whether it was done with Muni permission or just by sneaking the performers and camera in without the operator knowing about what was going to happen. As I recall, there was an article that made reference to the play/movie "Streetcar (or Bus) Named Desire".

Actually, this is NOT an April Fool's joke. A link to the original local newspaper article (forwarded to me by a UK Facebook friend) is posted at Flimsies; and I found a link to the actual video clip as proof that it, too, wasn't an April Fool's joke.

I refrained from mentioning or commenting on it because of the date.

There has been at least one commercial porn shoot that was done on an Amtrak train as it rolled, and there's a Japanese "hentai" film about a struggling rail line post-denationalisation that, in an effort to raise revenues on late-night passenger services, turned them into rolling bordellos. (Shades of "The Titfield Thunderbolt"!)

Why am I having flashbacks to a private jet which would simply circle around New York while executives were being entertained?

All in the name of scholarly research of course. :)

Yeah, I'd say so.

Surprised they'd have a budget for renting a train. While pornographers were among the first to monetize the internet, they're hurting due to so much material being freely available on the many XXX "tube" sites. And their last great cash cow, the live-interaction-with-models for $ per minute concept is up against the amateur cam sites which ask only for tips or nothing at all.

When I was with Amtrak, I knew a sleeping car attendant who busted a crew trying to secretly film a porno scene on board the sleeper on the Capitol Ltd., the same way the film crew in Georgia tried to "steal" a scene on the drawbridge and was run over by the CSX intermodal train. It does happen.

Orange Empire did a porn shoot about 25 years ago, for Playboy.

If they paid for the train and ran the train as a charter, what goes on aboard is no one's business as long as nothing illegal occurred.

As for the "outraged" families-if you don't want the railway to have to consider such charters, donate more money so that they have the financial option to refuse them.

My question had to do with just how much the railway could be identified as such, (it wasn't brazenly obvious, but it could have been "disguised" better) and how much effort was put into filming, costing the line money for operation, etc. (as far as I could tell, the train was static the entire time filming).

I've actually made something of a side hobby out of the economics of "vice industries" such as pornography and alcohol, and it's interesting to see that, while the cost of production and delivery continues to approach zero, there is still, surprisingly, a demand for "big-budget" productions that don't shirk on real production values--the budget for some parody spoofs has exceeded a million dollars, and some have better returns on investment than Hollywood blockbusters still. This production in England sort of pursued the same approach--it was not an "amateur" production by any means.

Quite a while back there was a round of debate when the Texas State RR chartered itself out for a "live" televised Robbie Knievel motorcycle jump stunt on national TV in February 2000. This is along the same lines of commerce--a lot of potential financial remuneration, but at a potential cost of image and popular standing. Your operation could be next. Supposing a motorcycle club ("gang"!) wanted your place to host an outing. Is their money as "green" as a church group? Strasburg has already broached the image gap by entertaining "steampunk" fanatics.

Orange Empire hosted a "Steampunk" event last month; we did one last year, and it turned out well, so a few weeks ago they came back. We had numerous vendors in our park area; the scene reminded my of a Renaissance Pleasure Faire, just a more recent flavor of anachronism. Some of the Museum members got into the spirit and dressed up in quasi-Victorian attire. It's fun, and it brings a lot of people who might not otherwise go to a railway museum out to ride behind our steam engine and in our 100-year-old streetcars. And members who are not interested in Steampunk can continue to work in area not open to the public.

(note: this is not an official report from the OERM organization, just my personal observation)

I recall a Playboy shoot in the 1990s at NH&I.

Better than ten years ago one of the editors of Modelleisenbahner sent me a copy of a German edition of Playboy. This had a lovely feature with some lovely women in lovely underwear posing on the trains of IIRC five lovely Saxonian steam heritage railways. Nobody had any kind of problem with it so far as I know. I still have it around here somewhere.

Unless somebody was being raped or murdered, or underage children were involved, I dare say that very few employees on any railroad in any country I've ever visited would object to somebody managing to make a porno on the property or aboard the trains. Only thing would be if the performers or crew were to foul active tracks, or be in danger of falling into the turntable pit, we'd have to ask them to move to a safer location.

If it were up to the crews, there wouldn't be any objections to the shoot, and the only problem would be no other work would be getting done, because they all would want to watch or be "extras" in the shoot. Seriously, Europeans have a much more enlightened attitude about such things. There is at least one German public model railroad display I've seen on YouTube that has a nudist camp depicted on it, with an animated couple in the bushes...
