I am looking at a Trains 1956 article on the Budd Pioneer III coach design. Anyone know what happened to these? Were many in service? |

I believe the SEPTA Silverliners were based largely on the Pioneer III design. The Amfleet I and II cars have a variation of the Pioneer III truck, as do some orders of cars for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). |

Yeah, but what of the actual Pioneer III prototype, not the half dozen that came later? Scrapped after the second round of turbine testing? LIRR did a lot of turbine testing so it's easy to get lost in the web coverage of that stuff.

Just so all you folks know, the two Pioneer III cars at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania no longer exist. They were deaccessioned last year and reduced to bite-size pieces by a contractor. They had been stripped of seats and pretty much everything else before they came to the museum so were not worth much as exhibits. |

According to Wikipedia, if it is true, three Pioneer III's went to the FRA test site. It doesn't mention what happened to them. Were the crashed beyond recognition while there? If not there's still hope for preservation. |

Yes indeed. 246 and 247 is correct. I heard some rumblings that one of the recently retired Silverliner IIs or IIIs was to be donated. Any truth to that? |

That's what I heard. I believe it was Reading 9001, let's hope it doesn't reach a similar demise. |

That's my photo of the GT3 on the Long Island Rail Road. Curious as what became of this particular experimental car. Anybody know? |

There are 2 old Silverliners III's at Wayne Shop out back, one is #238, don't know the # of the other because all the number boards have been removed. |

9001 from what I've read was donated to the RRMPA; it just hasn't been moved yet. |
