Maine Central 470, purchased by New England Steam Corporation, tender separated and rolled on her own polished journals; plans and contracts signed to move her in 2016 for restoration; funding in place (Freeman Foundation and Deupree Foundation) for indoor restoration facility; Funding from you - the public, to make all this happen; an active crew of regular workers who show up and get filthy almost every week.

As we close out 2015, this is a major uptick in the life of the largest surviviing steam locomotive in New England.


As noted elsewhere on this Board, WW&F #9 A brilliant restoration of the only surviving product of Portland Locomotive Works.

This is what Youngstown Steel Heritage has been up to in 2015:

The last operational locomotive from the US Steel Ohio Works passed from mill ownership into preservation. Alco S2 US Steel No 73/McDonald Steel 777.

Jones & Laughlin Steel 58, 23" gauge Porter 0-4-0T begins restoration to operation.

Pennsylvania Trolley Museum's West Penn Railways Co. curved side car 832 runs under its own power for the first time since February 7, 1954.

Age of Steam Roundhouse acquired Kettle Moraine 2-6-2 number 9, Woodward Iron 2-10-0 number 41 (AT&N 401), and an air-operated switcher.

Everett Railroad completed restoration of Bath & Hammondsport 2-6-0 number 11, and began occasional steam operations.

Belmont Trolley Inc formed itself, became chartered, reached an agreement with NCDOT to operate on an unused part of the P&N, acquired a complete car that is a sister to cars which ran in the area a century ago, began restoration, acquired two chicken coops from another southeastern streetcar line, built a wish list of other carbodies from southeastern lines for future acquisition, and bought a large stock of parts leftover from the beginning of a tourist streetcar line in Savannah.

New Hope Valley RR acquired a historic depot from a NC shortline, is raising funds to move it to Bonsal, is building trackage for it and a storage yard for some previouslty donated equipment which was only recently brought to the site, completed the tender on Cliffside 110 while doing running maintenance on 17 and forging ahead on the frame and running gear repairs. Even more importantly, a new member with fund raising experience is now working on real capital project funding, and the marketing of our events is building visitation to much higher levels.

Alaska Railroad USATC Consolidation #557. It's been a good year!

Machined drivers returned from Tennessee Valley RR, painted and stored. Replacement firebox installation about 85% completed (not including stay replacement). Calculations completed and Form 4 package drafted. Locomotive frame cleaned and painted. Tender tank and frame painted and their overhauls are nearly complete. Adapters and roller bearings for tender trucks acquired and side frames modified to accept rollers. Buffer recreated using acquired and newly fabricated parts and installed. Many smaller parts of the locomotive and tender have been overhauled or fabricated.

If Preston doesn't jump on it I will! USATC S100 #5002 was shipped up to Boyertown from Kentucky with long term plans of restoration to service.

Allentown and Auburn began operation out of Kutztown around Easter, repainted ex-PBNE SW1 206, and got their open car in service.

American Steam Railroad successfully loaded, moved and unloaded our favorite wayward Reading T-1, and got her a lot closer to home in Cleveland, OH at Midwest's B&O West 3rd St. roundhouse. Fundraising and mechanical work has commenced. No fatal flaws have been found in the boiler and all things are looking up towards her return to steam.

Maine went from one 2-footer in steam to THREE (3), count 'em 3 2-footers in steam. Not only did WW&F No.9 returned to service this weekend at Alna, but Monson RR No.3 has also returned to steam a couple of weeks ago and is steaming now in Portland, ME up and down the waterfront.

VMOT completed a rather efficient restoration of N&W J class #611, returning her to service this summer and she got to strut her stuff on the N&W mainline in style.

The Rockhill Trolley Museum had a busy year of accomplishments.

Johnstown Traction Company 311, the museum’s first trolley car acquired in 1960, operated for the first time since 2003, when it was removed from service for restoration.

Philadelphia Transportation Company PCC car 2743 was returned from a contract restoration job and returned to service.

San Diego Light rail vehicle car 1019 was returned to operation with trolley poles and has been a popular car with members and visitors at the museum.

All three cars were dedicated in August with a special Three Car - Three Generation ceremony held at the museum.

A new platform made of colored concrete and stamped to simulate bricks was built and period light poles were installed, greatly improving the appearance of the museum area.

Thanks to all of our volunteers and supporters for their contributions to make these projects, as well as others, possible.

The first that leapt into my mind was the completion of N&W 611's restoration, but I will let others closer to the source go into details on that train.
Closer to my home, the Delaware-Lackawanna was able to take their EMC DL&W 426 off long term display from Steamtown, and get her back in running order in less than 6 weeks. She was one of the stars of Steamtown's RailFest. Also, DL repainted their DL&W caboose back to her original number and Lackawanna markings, even though their Genessee Valley colors were kept.

D-L was a huge help for Steamtown, in offering the most interesting mix of motive power for the very long excursion season. From a celebration of Scranton's 150th anniversary in April, to the Santa Trains this past Saturday, Alco diesels from the 50s and 60s roared on the lines of Northeastern PA.

The Anthracite Railroads Historical Society's stalwart F3 664 ran nearly every Scranton Limited and Nay Aug Gorge Limited scheduled by Steamtown, without any fuss or problem that I could tell. Her stable mates, 663 and 664B are nearly ready to join her in ABA configuration for next year's long haul excursions. Plus their FA2 is causing quite a bit of discussion this past year, with the work that began at Steamtown last winter, and continues at the DL shop in Scranton.

Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society's 765 and her consist of colorful streamliners really brought home the importance of steam operations on the line. As if we didn't know this already. It was a memorable couple of weeks when she was here, and brought a reason to take Nickel Plate 759 out of the roundhouse for a few days, too.

Steamtown's Baldwin Loco Works 26 is in the final days of restoration, and before Christmas, we hope to see her ready to run in Scranton once again. She is already decorated with her XMas wreath, so I will keep you posted.

In other news, Scranton's big railroad, the Canadian Pacific Railway, left town for an even bigger railroad, Norfolk Southern, to establish their footing in this part of the state. Not much other than the sale of the line has happened yet, but it seems 2016 will be a big year for all of the above.

The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway down in Nelsonville, Ohio finished up their restoration of Ohio Power Company 0-6-0 #3. After a nearly decade long restoration, the 0-6-0 has been put back in service pulling regular trains along their line.

At National Capital Trolley Museum (NCTM):

- Restoration of Capital Traction 522 (American Car 1898) made significant progress with completion of most exterior restoration of the car body. The existing Brill 21E truck was shipped to Lyons Industries in Ebensberg, PA together with a Lord Baltimore truck from Baltimore Streetcar Museum to create a proper standard gauge Lord Baltimore truck for CTCo 522.

-Return of Capital Traction 27 (a. DC Transit 766) from Rail Technical Services in Guilford, CT after 14 years. NCTM will complete the restoration of CTCo 27 on site.

Midwest Railway Preservation Society has completed an ultrasound test on the boiler of GTW4070. We assisted American Steam Railroad Preservation Society with unloading Reading 2100 and getting it moved into the W.3rd Street roundhouse. Horizon rail is another tenant at the roundhouse and they completed rebuilds on an SW1500 and a GP10,and both are now on lease. Our two NKP day coaches were leased out to Cuy. Valley Scenic for use at Steam In The Valley. We have converted NKP 62 to a HEP powered hot water heating system, and we are still working on finishing that in NKP 90. We just finished installing a 450 KW generator in 4412 so it can provide 600KW for HEP. 62 and 4412 are leased out right now to Dennison Railroad Museum for Polar Express. We started work on ex River Terminal SW1 #531 with a goal of restoring it for operation. We repaired ex Oliver Mining RS3 #123 (Alco 1950) and we have been running it for shop switching and at Open Houses. We have had 8 Open Houses this year and they have been sold out ever since we started listing them with Groupon. The turntable control shack has been replaced and a replacement motor has been installed, wiring for that still has to be completed. We repaired the transmission on our diesel Trackmobile so we have two operating Trackmobiles. New arrivals include a UP extended vision caboose that was on landlocked display in Brookpark, OH, a 50KW trailer mounted generator with 440V capability, a Plymouth gas powered critter that needs work for operation, about three tons of NOS Alco 244 engine parts, and a 400 KW generator from Joliet,IL that can be used in another HEP car. Funding campaigns have been started for resoration of 4070 and rebuilding of stalls 6 through 10 of the roundhouse. And last, but by no means least, we adopted Chessie, the roundhouse cat, and he has enter trained all of us throughout the year.
