As I mentioned the other day in the Al Chione thread, this topic has been at the top of the to do list for awhile, so here goes:

I don't have a big introduction like I did for the AT&SF or NYC threads, and instead of dividing the roster into prewar and postwar, and then by type (which I did for the NYC), I'll be listing cars by type, then by configuration, and then by Lot.

First up...

Sleepers:

In the case of sleepers, there were 5 configurations which had Lots ordered both prewar and postwar, 3 configurations that were only built prewar, 2 configurations that were only built postwar, and 2 prewar configurations that were replaced by very similar postwar configurations. All prewar cars were sold to PRR on 12/31/1945.

10RM-5DB Cascade-Series:

Prewar series. Postwar counterpart: 10RM-6DB sleepers. All cars built by P-S.

2 Cars, P-S, Lot #6542, Plan #4072A, 1938, Class PS105:

Ordered in June 1937 and delivered in April 1938.

Ted, your thread is entitled "Surviving PRR Lightweight Cars".

75% or more of what is included has been scrapped.

C'MON MAN!!! Words (like surviving) mean things!

(I STILL haven't found out what happened to that 5th B&O Slumbercoach)

Sleepers, Continued:

10RM-6DB:

Postwar series. Most cars had Rapids-series names, with several Lots of cars named after towns (for the SAL pool), after Counties (for the ACL pool), after Rivers (for the SOU pool), or with Eagle-series names for the MP pool. Also included in this roster are 10-6 sleepers built for the PRR pool, but owned by L&N (River names), N&W (County names), or RF&P (King names). Of the cars with Rapids-series names, 2 were built as part of a N&W order, but assigned to peak Florida service, and 1 car was built for New York-to-Los Angeles transcontinental sleeper service on the Broadway Limited and California Zephyr via Chicago.

2 Cars, Budd, Lot #9662-033, Plan #9503, 1949, Class PS106B:

Ordered in January 1947 and delivered in August 1949. Ordered in the same Lot as the 20 N&W 10-6 sleepers acquired by PRR in 1964 and converted to commuter coaches. Assigned to both the ACL and SAL Florida pools during peak travel.

#8451 Scioto Rapids to PC #4334 Toronto Islands (1970), sold in 1973 to Amtrak #2798, later stored at Beech Grove, listed for sale in September 1991 and sold to Bennett Levin. From what I can tell, Levin initially planned on refurbishing this car, and so renamed it Little Juniata Rapids (1st). However, Levin later changed plans and instead acquired from Amtrak in 2003 a former SP 10-6 sleeper (SP #9022/Amtrak #2698/#2444 Cypress Grove), which was refurbished as JTCX/JTFS #4940/#800000 Little Juniata Rapids (2nd). The former PRR #8451 was then (when??) donated to the RR Museum of Pennsylvania.

#8452 Sturgeon Rapids to PC #4335 Toronto Harbour (1970), sold in 1973 to Amtrak #2799, retired in November 1977 and sold for scrap to Tuman Demolition in Indianapolis. However, this car was not scrapped, and was resold (when??) to the C&NW, which placed it in service as crew dormitory #410 (1st). The #410 (1st) was damaged by fire in January 1985 and subsequently scrapped. To replace this car, C&NW acquired from Hogtrain a former Nickel Plate 10-6 sleeper (NKP #211 City of Lima/IC #3532 Cynthia), which was placed in service in 1985 as the #410 (2nd) Lake Michigan, now owned by the Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society.

1 Car, Budd, Lot #9662-031, Plan #9520, 1948, Class PS106B:

Ordered in December 1946 and delivered in November 1948. Ordered for New York-to-Los Angeles transcontinental sleeper service on the Broadway Limited and California Zephyr via Chicago.

#8449 Silver Rapids to PC #4378, sold in 1974 to Amtrak #2649, planned for conversion in 1983 to head end power (HEP) accessible sleeper #2482, which was cancelled, car was instead retired in October 1983 and stored in Sunnyside Yard, sold in 1985 to David Goodheart, later (when??) acquired by Bert Hermey and Al Bishop, d.b.a. California Zephyr Railcar Charters, as #800481.

6 Cars, Budd, Lot #9662-025, Plan #9503, 1949, Class PS106B:

Ordered in March 1946 and delivered between June and August 1949. Ordered for the Silver Meteor pool, and the SAL also ordered 6 cars built in Lot #9662-026, delivered concurrently.

#8333 Athens to PC #4355, sold in 1973 to Amtrak #2706, planned for conversion in 1981 or 1982 to HEP accessible sleeper #2479, which was cancelled, car was instead retired (1983?) and stored (where?) until listed for sale in September 1991. Likely sold at auction in 1992, buyer unknown. Current status unknown.

#8334 Bradenton to PC #4368, sold in 1973 to Amtrak #2707, planned for conversion in 1981 or 1982 to HEP accessible sleeper #2480, which was cancelled, car was instead retired (1983?) and stored (where?) until listed for sale in September 1991. Sold at auction to Ringling Brothers (likely in 1992), but car was not selected for rebuild, later (when??) resold to a private owner as RPCX #999995 and moved to the Florida RR Museum (formerly the Florida Gulf Coast RR Museum) in Parrish, FL.

#8335 Chester to PC #4369, scrapped in 1971.

#8336 Clinton to PC #4371, retired in 1971 and sold in 1972* to NdeM #639 Madrid, old post on the Yahoo! Finance MEXLIST page lists this car as part of the scrap line in Huehuetoca as of 11/24/2000.

*1972 is the date listed by Wayner in "The Cars That Went to Mexico".

#8337 Elberton damaged by fire in 1956. Paraphrasing from information posted by Uncle Joe ("retcsxcfm") and Topfuel on Trainorders, and by Al ("passengerfan") on the Classic Trains forum: the Elberton was burned in a bad grade crossing accident at Fort Green Springs*, FL, in April 1956**. It was the last of 3 cars of a SAL Tampa-to-Boca Grande*** local (southbound), pulled by a Baldwin Babyface, followed by a baggage and heavyweight coach. The Elberton was running as a New York-to-Boca Grande sleeper. In the early morning, the train was hit by a gasoline truck that came up to the crossing eastbound. The driver might have been blinded by the rising sun, and never hit the brakes. The truck hit the train just behind the baggage car, with gasoline spilling onto the coach and starting a fire. The truck driver and 3 crew who were riding in the coach were killed. After the accident, the cars were moved to storage at the Gary Shop in Tampa, waiting for the insurance investigation to wrap up. Afterwards, the Elberton was sent back to Altoona to be rebuilt. Upon first glance, damage was severe in 4 of the roomettes, and the decision was made to rebuild it to 11 double bedrooms. Al comments that "it was hoped the original six bedrooms the car was built with could be reused and all that would be necessary would be cleaning. After removal the damage to the entire car...was realized and the ventilation system needed to be completely replaced as well. It is doubtful [that] the car would have been rebuilt if the extent of the damage had been known before rebuilding commenced." Al states that the new 5 bedrooms that replaced the damaged 10 roomettes were supplied to PRR by Budd in kit form, whereas Spear states that the rebuild was done by P-S. Anyways, the rebuild was completed in June 1959****, to Plan #9542, PRR Class PS11. Topfuel states that "the 5 new bedrooms were not the as-built BL/BC style, but had the 'elevator' style upper berths and the 2 folding chairs for seating during the day. Pullman Standard called them the 'S' style bedrooms." After rebuild, the Elberton was reassigned to one of the Broadway Limited trainsets, the only stainless steel car in that train, which Joe said was "to the dismay of PRR purists that wanted an all tuscan consist." Besides the Broadway, the Elberton was among a number of foreign road 11DB sleepers assigned to the North Coast Limited during peak Yellowstone Park travel, along with cars from UP and IC. To PC #4381, sold in 1973 to Amtrak #2239, retired in October 1981 and stored (where?). Current status unknown.

*Don't try to look for Fort Green Springs in Google Earth, you won't find it. However, it did turn up in a Google search. The unincorporated communities of Ft. Green and Ft. Green Springs are located in northwestern Hardee County along the ex-SAL line to Fort Myers, with Ft. Green Springs located in the area around the crossing of the tracks by State Highway 62, between Duette to the west and the junction with State Highway 35 to the east.

**In some of his posts, Joe says 1955 instead of April 1956.

***Would the local's final destination (or sleeper set-out) have been Punta Gorda, Fort Myers, or Naples?

****Al states that the fire took place in February 1959 on the Silver Meteor in the car's electrical cabinet; I'm thinking this date is actually when the rebuild of the car began.

#8338 Greenwood to PC #4372, sold in 1973 to Amtrak #2708, planned for conversion in 1981 or 1982 to HEP accessible sleeper #2481, which was cancelled, car was instead retired (1983?) and stored (where?) until listed for sale in September 1991. Sold at auction to either Bob Moen or Charles Barthoid as CBRX #2708 (likely in 1992), and later moved to storage in Randolph, MN (likely in 1998). One of several CBRX cars moved in 2003 from Randolph to Charles City, IA, where Bob and Charles store most of their cars.

A total of 42 10-6 sleepers were built in this Lot; besides the 6 PRR-owned cars, 4 were owned by RF&P, 7 by FEC, and the majority (25) by ACL. Al lists that the 6 PRR cars were assigned to the Florida Special (winter), East Coast Champion (summer), and West Coast Champion (year round); assignments for the other 36 cars are not listed.

#8345 Chester County to PC #4370, retired in 1971 and sold to Jones Properties, which renamed it F. Fay, Jr. Current status unknown.

#8346 Baltimore County to PC #4367, retired in 1971 and scrapped.

#8347 Bucks County to PC #4357, retired in 1971 and scrapped.

#8348 Delaware County to PC #4359, retired in 1971 and scrapped.

#8349 Union County to PC #4380, sold in 1974 to Amtrak #2796, retired in November 1977 and sold to the Fowler Packing Company (Fresno), resold in 1982 to SCD #721 Oceania.

#8350 Hudson County to PC #4373, retired in 1971 and scrapped.

11 Cars, P-S, Lot #6814, Plan #4140, 1949, Class PS106:

46 of the 49 10-6 sleepers built in this Lot were for the Southern pool, and most were ordered in August 1946. 8 of these 49 cars were owned by the PRR, 5 by L&N (3 of these were built for the PRR pool), 1 each by the A&WP and WofA, 5 by FEC, and the majority (29) were owned by the Southern (5 of these 29 by subsidiary CNO&TP). According to Madden, the Southern-owned cars were delivered between August and September 1949, and all other cars were delivered in October, whereas Randall lists that 46 of these cars were delivered in September and October, and the 3 L&N-owned cars for the PRR pool were delivered in April 1950. The 46 cars ordered for the SOU pool were built with fluted sides, whereas the 3 L&N cars ordered for the PRR pool were built with smooth sides and painted Tuscan Red; these 3 cars were assigned to through sleeper service between New York and cities in Kentucky and Tennessee via Cincinnati. The 46 Southern pool cars were assigned either to the Royal Palm or to the Crescent; all 8 of the PRR-owned cars were assigned to the Crescent.

PRR-Owned Cars:

#8351 Birch River to PC #4356, retired in 1971 and stored at Altoona, later (when??) sold or donated to the Railroader's Memorial Museum.

#8352 Bush River to PC #4358, retired in 1971 and scrapped.

As posted by Topfuel in the "Surviving SOU Lightweight Cars" thread: "the recently rebuilt trucks were used under former NYC Budd diner 448. The carbody of the Middle River was scrapped" (1984 or several years later?).

#8355 Patapsco River to PC #4375, retired in 1971 and scrapped.

#8356 Raritan River wrecked in 1968 (when and where?).

#8357 Schuylkill River to PC #4377, retired in 1971 and scrapped.

#8358 Susquehanna River to PC #4379, retired in 1971 and scrapped.

L&N-Owned PRR Pool Cars:

Al lists that these 3 through sleeper services started in October 1949, which matches the delivery dates listed by Madden. Besides the 3 L&N-owned cars, PRR supplied six 10-6 sleepers (all with Rapids-series names) to these through services, for a total of 3 cars per service. The Rapids-series cars assigned to these 3 services will be listed in a later post. Al further states that: "[w]estbound the [3] cars traveled in the PRR Cincinnati Limited from New York to Cincinnati where the [3] sleeping cars were handed off to the L&N. L&N train #99 forwarded the [3] sleeping cars beyond. Train #99 dropped the Louisville [s]leeping car first then dropped the [2nd] sleeping car at Bowling Green where it was picked up by train #199 and forwarded to Memphis. The [3rd] sleeping car continued in train #99 to Nashville. Eastbound the [2] sleeping cars originating in Nashville and Louisville traveled in train #8 to Cincinnati. At Cincinnati the cars were transferred to the eastbound...Cincinnati Limited. The [3rd] sleeping car returning from Memphis took a rather different return route to New York. The car traveled on the rear of L&N train #104 between Memphis and Bowling Green where it was set out and picked up by L&N train #4, [the] Azalean, to Cincinnati. From Cincinnati the car traveled to Pittsburgh in PRR train #204 where it was once again set out. It completed the trip from Pittsburgh to New York City in the...Iron City Express."

#3410 Green River assigned to New York-to-Louisville through sleeper service. The Louisville through sleeper was discontinued as of 4/27/1958. Sold in 1973 to Amtrak #2812, retired in 1979 and sold in 1981 to the Anbel Corporation (Brownsville, TX), resold in 1982 to SCD, initially as #610, which was incorrectly applied, error was quickly discovered and the proper number and name, #707 America, was applied.

#3411 Kentucky River assigned to New York-to-Memphis through sleeper service. The Memphis through sleeper was discontinued as of 7/14/1956. Sold in 1973 to Amtrak #2813, retired in March 1976 and sold to the Bluegrass RR Museum, scrapped in May 2014.

#3412 Barren River assigned to New York-to-Nashville through sleeper service. The Nashville through sleeper was discontinued as of 3/1/1954. Wrecked in 1968 (when and where?).

There were at least two surviving carbon steel PRR sleepers being used in excursion service into the late 80's, early '90's. I believe one was Catalpa Falls, and there was another one, co-owned, so I was told, by Donnie Biggs, who was a Conrail operator in Toledo for a lot of years. I knew his father from the Akron Railroad Club. Are either of them still extant? I remember one of them was part of the consist that went with 765 for a number of years.

Catalpa Falls has been discussed in the "Al Chione Slides" thread recently; it's currently at Ridgeley, WV (WMSR) awaiting enough demand for its use to justify the expense of further upgrades/rehabilitation.

Additional Info:

I went through the posts on the old ACL & SAL Railroads Historical Society forum at greenspun.com, and found one thread with more info on the fiery grade crossing accident that involved Budd-built 10-6 sleeper Elberton:

http://greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=004oRw

Michael W. Savchak posts that the accident occurred on the morning of April 11, 1956. The train was #321, the connection train to Port Boca Grande. He states that 2 of the crewmen were killed: the conductor and the express messenger. Michael also says that the heavyweight coach was completely destroyed by the fire. The train was led by Baldwin DR-6-4-1500 "Babyface" #2701, 1 of 3 such engines (#2700-#2702), which Warren Calloway posts were based out of Tampa and regularly used on this line. He also states that in 1964, these engines were traded in to EMD on the SDP35 order.

10RM-6DB Rapids-Series:

17 Cars, P-S, Lot #6792, Plan #4129, 1949, Class PS106A:

Hi Ted (and all the rest of you)!
With regards to your list of Surviving PRR Lightweight cars, I have a little info to add on at least one car you have mentioned so far, and possibly a couple more:

As you mentioned:

"#8328 Towanda Rapids assigned to New York-to-Nashville through sleeper service and general service pool, renamed in September 1956 to John Pitcairn, then renamed again in October to H.J. Heinz, likely for reassignment to the Pittsburgher, to PC #4346, retired in 1971 and sold to a "Mr. Clark" somewhere in Pennsylvania. Current status unknown"

This car (along with the "Andrew Mellon" and the "Richard Beatty Mellon") were all sitting on their trucks, on railway ties, in the forest adjacent to an abandoned and ripped up railroad right of way behind the "Junction 19-80" campground, I believe in Pennsylvania. This would have been back at least 20 years ago. My family camped there twice at this approximate time. The first time we were there, my father and I went through the cars and stripped a lot of the signage out of them.... they were derelict, overgrown with trees etc. One of the things I got out of the H.J. Heinz was a plastic coated car diagram, calling the car "Towanda Rapids"... I always wondered why the name didnt match. The H.J. Heinz was in PC green, while the other 2 were still in PRR paint. As I mentioned, they were still on their trucks, interiors pretty much complete. It was very eerie going through these cars - windows broken, mouldy musty smelling, all toilets smashed etc... very dark due to all the overgrowth.
Along with these cars, there was an aandoned farm house, and a small barn.
A year or to later, we went back, and found all three cars, and the farmhouse, gone!
I would assume the cars were scrapped where they sat.
I was always curious to know how the cars came to be there - I assume they were brought in by rail, and lifted of the rails by crane.
The "Junction 19-80" campground had arailroad theme to it - the front office, pool change house, and possbily a couple other structures were former boxcar bodies off their trucks. Perhaps the campground owner had had plans for these cars at the campground, but never followed through.
Will be interested to see if the "Andrew Mellon" and "Richard Beatty Mellon" were sold to the same "Mr. Clark".
I kick myself for only taking 1 picture of the cars... which only really shows the H.J. Heinz". I will try to scan the picture and post it here when I get a chance.

Just googled "Junction 19-80 Campground" - it is/was in Mercer PA.
Went to google maps, and loked at the satelite photos for the area - look as though the campground is no longer a campground - 2 boxcar bodies still visible... cant really see any sign of the railroad right-of-way though. Lots of trees! Address was 1266 Old Mercer Rd.
Location of the farmhouse and cars was just northeast of where Old Mercer Rd makes a sharp bend to go over Neshannock Creek.

Peter,

Thank you for the information on these 3 sleepers! Regarding the 2 Mellon cars, both were 4DB-4C-2DR sleepers, from a Lot of 15 such cars built by AC&F in 1948. When built, these 2 cars had Imperial-series names, as did the other 13 cars built in that Lot. In 1956, these 2 cars were renamed, likely for reassignment to the Pittsburgher. Randall lists that both of these cars were retired in 1971 and "sold to party in Pennsylvania for motel." I'm thinking that the purchaser was "Mr. Clark," but I can't confirm that at this point. Any other forum members familiar with who Mr. Clark was, what the original plan was, or why the cars were instead stored near the campground? Or is the "motel" referred to actually the campground?

PRR #8387 Imperial Brink renamed in 1956 to Andrew W. Mellon, intended to be renumbered as PC #4389 (not applied, as reported).

PRR #8388 Imperial Cliff renamed in 1956 to Richard Beatty Mellon, intended to be renumbered as PC #4390 (not applied, as reported).

Some additional info on the Cascade-series sleepers which went to Amtrak:

Before I had listed:

#8073 Cascade Brim to U.S. Army #89573 to Amtrak #2510 to Kirk Potter.

#8074 Cascade Brink to USAX #89574 to Amtrak #2511 to K. Potter.

#8077 Cascade Cliff to USAX #89575 to Amtrak #2512 to K. Potter to Golden Arrow Tours (GALT).

#8086 Cascade Heights to USAX #89576 to Amtrak #2513 to K. Potter to RY Exposition Co., now RY Museum of Greater Cincinnati.

#8089 Cascade Knoll to USAX #89577 to Amtrak #2514 to K. Potter to GALT to Illinois RY Museum.

#8091 Cascade Ledge to USAX #89578 to Amtrak #2515 to K. Potter.

#8092 Cascade Mantle to USAX #89579 to Amtrak #2516 to K. Potter.

#8093 Cascade Meadow to USAX #89580 to Amtrak #2517 to K. Potter.

#8084 Cascade Gardens to USAX #89581 to Amtrak #2518 to K. Potter to RY Exposition Co. #800048, now RMGC.

#8110 Cascade Trails to USAX #89582 to Amtrak #2519 to K. Potter to RY Exposition Co., now RMGC.

Now, based on info found in the "Private Passenger Car Annual", the listing should be changed to:

#8073 Cascade Brim to USAX #89573 to Amtrak #2510 to Tuman Demolition to K. Potter to Pullman Travel Company (Wheaton, IL) and leased to Golden Arrow Line, Limited (Gurnee, IL) (GALT), renamed Cascade Foam, intended as #1051.

#8074 Cascade Brink to USAX #89574 to Amtrak #2511 to Tuman Demolition to K. Potter to RY Exposition Co.

#8086 Cascade Heights to USAX #89575 to Amtrak #2512 to Tuman Demolition to K. Potter to Smoky Hill RY & Historical Society (Kansas City) and leased to GALT, intended as #1052, later to RY Exposition Co., now RMGC.

#8077 Cascade Cliff to USAX #89576 to Amtrak #2513 to Tuman Demolition to K. Potter to Pullman Travel Co. and leased to GALT, intended as #1053.

#8091 Cascade Ledge to USAX #89577 to Amtrak #2514 to Tuman Demolition to K. Potter to Smoky Hill and leased to GALT, intended as #1054.

#8089 Cascade Knoll to USAX #89578 to Amtrak #2515 to Tuman Demolition to K. Potter to Pullman Travel Co. and leased to GALT, intended as #1055, to IRYM.

#8093 Cascade Meadow to USAX #89579 to Amtrak #2516 to Tuman Demolition to K. Potter to Pullman Travel Co. and leased to GALT, intended as #1056.

#8092 Cascade Mantle to USAX #89580 to Amtrak #2517 to Tuman Demolition to K. Potter to Pullman Travel Co. and leased to GALT, intended as #1057.

#8084 Cascade Gardens to USAX #89581 to Amtrak #2518 to Tuman Demolition to K. Potter to RY Exposition Co., now RMGC.

#8110 Cascade Trails to USAX #89582 to Amtrak #2519 to Tuman Demolition to K. Potter to RY Exposition Co., now RMGC.

In addition, it should be noted that the planned Amtrak numbers were not applied to these cars, and that the planned GALT numbers were tentative at the time of publication, and might have been changed as the refurbishing of each car was completed.

Now, here's what's confusing:

The website for the RY Museum of Greater Cincinnati lists 2 of these 10-5 sleepers: the Cascade Gardens and the Cascade Heights. The source material doesn't list that the museum, at that time the RY Exposition Company, acquired the Heights, but does list the Gardens, Trails, and Brim. So the question is, does the museum only have 2 cars, as listed, or are there 3 cars as suggested by the source material. And whether or not it's 2 or 3, was a misidentification made at some point, and the car currently listed as the Heights is one of the other two? Can anyone provide clarification? And what happened to the other 10-5 cars leased to GALT? Thanks in advance!
