What do you do for HEP when running without a diesel? Do you have an HEP generator car, or are the cars all self contained?

I have wondered what FWRHS going to do with 765 aux tender surely it would be done by now I believe they still have I just don't know what the hold up. I think maybe cost has something to do with it.

The N&W aux tender isn't being used by 611 and travels with the passenger train set which is more or less being used altogether by the groups operating their respective engines. Seems pretty cost effective to just keep them together.

Freight diesels do not provide HEP to the train. NS 42 is equipped with a generator for this purpose on steam excursions. Norfolk Southern has three other cars equipped with HEP generators.

This happened in the 80's with the Atlanta & West Point 290. The (state run) New George Railroad replaced the entirety of the tank and in the process decreased the water capacity by about 1/3rd while dramatically increasing the coal capacity..... tank MAY be somewhat taller than the original also.

15 tons to 20 tons then 11,000 gals to 9,500 gals. The new tank & bunker are noticeably taller.

I'm on the west coast, so I haven't really followed the trips and consists closely. Around here, the few mainline trips typically have an Amtrak loco in the consist. I guess the NS trips are different. You're right though, you can't seem to find a freight loco with HEP or a steam generator these days. ;)

If you wanted a locomotive to use as a helper equipped with HEP, then wait a couple of years and acquire one of the MBTA F40's that have a separate HEP engine. With most of the old Amtrak F40's either sold or scrapped that might be your best bet.

The question would be would Amtrak let you use it and be covered under their insurance umbrella....if not outright, lease the engine to Amtrak then it would be covered....

My understanding is that usually, excursions that have Amtrak power in the consist are operating under Amtrak's liability insurance, as an Amtrak train. Is that still the case?
