The NYC 0-6-0 on static display in Utica, NY was hit by a runaway covered hopper today. Apparently, the car got away from a NYS&W crew and hit the locomotive head on, pushing the tender through a wall behind the display and causing a roof to fall on the tender. The covered hopper came to rest up against the smokebox door.

Not a good day for a rather rare gem.

Rob

Looks like the tender trucks were knocked loose from the frame. I'd guess the front end of the engine is a mess. Just hope there's no serious frame damage.

Wonder why there were no car stops or bumper in front of the 0-6-0?

If you look at an aerial view, it looks like there is indeed a bumper in front of the 0-6-0.

My recollection is that there was a very similar runaway incident in Utica, back in the 1980s or 1990s -- juveniles released a car and it rolled thru town, down Schuyler Street, and into the NYS&W's shop, causing extensive damage.

Yes - they destroyed an ex-ACL diner and an ex-IC sleeping car.

Looks like the steam dome was knocked off too. Wonder why it was on a connected track?

Sounds like wheel chocks might be a good investment on that spur... after two runaways of loaded tankcars at the airbase, I got management to buy three really good ones.

Thanks Diningcartim!

Below is a screenshot of the google map aerial view, to which I have added a few labels, in red text, that I previously posted in the Update on Utica & Mohawk Valley NRHS Equipment (9/6/2013) thread:

The newspaper article says that car was "was parked near the Burrstone Road bridge off the North-South Arterial." That's the location of a runaround track, which is a few miles (probably 3 or 4) from Union Station, where the collision happened.

Even though this track is now connected to the NYS&W (ex-DL&W), I believe this track once served NYO&W trains that operated into and out of Utica.

In the photo "Osprey & NYS&W Runaway July 21 027.JPG" you can see the pilot beam probably broken off, just ahead of the cylinders.
