got a reply. Quote: Hello,
The details on the wrench in the link below are as follows: · It was a non-catalogue special to begin · It entered full time production in 1964 · Our best guess is the wrench in the image might be 1940's or early 1950's Regards, Gray Tools Canada |

It looks clearly for large nuts than piping which steamers had plenty of. |

We always called them monkey wrenches around our house a lot different from a pipe wrench. Al |

In addition to the above question, what exactly are the small tubes for on the right? They seem to be a common item in these tool boxes but I can't imagine what they'd be used for. Thanks. Jason |

I'm pretty sure a big ball pein hammer would be in the round holes to the left and an alligator wrench (or, more recently, a modern pipe wrench) would be in the slots to the right. Would the tubes be to hold screwdrivers securely? For those who haven't used an alligator wrench: http://craftworktools.com/70451.html Steve Hunter |

Those tubes are probably holders for spare water glasses, wrapped in paper or cloth to cushion them from the bouncing. Fusees would be another item to fit a round holder like that, but usually more than 3 are carried. Howard P. |

Going back further (but too far for this CN engine) the short lengths of pipe could hold spare electrodes for carbon arc headlights. |

looks like a bigger tube to the rear, I think I see machined in ends on one tube, probable extensions to get more -ooomph- on tightening a nut on a wrench. |
