Joy. She'll be 6 months along in her corrosion study when more money will be needed to 'save' her again...
As much as I'd love to see this ship turned into a tourist attraction and really preserved somehow, I have no idea why anyone would donate anything to what has become and never-ending ‘stopgap’ effort to keep her from becoming pots and pans...

Corrosion? Her hull and superstructure is in very sound shape despite the appearance of her last paint job and the length of time since her last drydocking. I've seen lake freighters that looked almost as bad, that came out of the shipyard in short order after their 5 year survey looking like they had just been launched. Most of those issues that look so awful like peeling paint require only routine prep work prior to painting.

And her interior has very little corrosion damage. Some isolated water damage from missing windows here and there, but not very much.

I repeat what I said earlier in this thread. Her gutted interior had to happen anyways. It's an advantage, not a disadvantage that they got rid of the asbestos and such in Turkey 20 years ago or so. Don't let appearances fool you since it's a significant savings for any adaptive re-use plans.

And while too bad that interior fittings are virtually all gone, I also repeat what I said earlier about her interior design not being particularly timeless like a prewar liner typically was. Significant remodeling would undoubtedly have to happen to her interior aesthetics if she were to be turned into something like a hotel/convention center.

Allot of the structure above the hull is aluminium, put that together with steel and add salt water and you have an expensive mess to repair. Can't wait to read the corrosion report.

Exactly.
Imagine the outrage if you donated half a million bucks to a 'restoration effort' for any RR-related thing, only to later realize it went to rental for the space it was taking up and hardly a single penny went to anything that is preservation at all, other than keeping the torch away.
I really don't get where they're finding these donors who shovel money at them simply for a parking space fee (and nothing else).

Last time I heard the United States was completely stripped out of all fittings including the boiler room and main bridge. It makes you wonder often just what would it take to replicate all that antiquated equipment. You'd have to search up 60 year old schematics and blueprints not to mention where would you find someone that could fabricate the parts? I don't think Strasburg would be up for the job nor even the guys down at Norfolk shipyard. It's indeed an interesting idea so to speak and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for such a national treasure.
