Interesting depot. Glad you were there to save it. I noticed it has no operators bay and apparently (at least in 1948) no order board. So, was there ever an agent stationed there?

Les

Yes, Les, Quincy was a telegraph station at least up until the 30s, not sure about in 1948 when Paul Westhaeffer took his photo. Passenger service ended in 1932 on the branch. Quincy like many small depots never had an operators bay. Interestingly, the West Fayetteville station stood just north of where Quincy Station resides now, and was a smaller version of the same style depot.

Ran across this thread today and wondered if this old W2A class hopper car had ever gotten its B&O lettering applied? Couldn't find any info about it on the internet.

Hi Les,

Yes it did... the 13 states logo. I stopped by to see it in July.

Chambersburg played a big role in my families history and I like going back, but while I was photographing the hopper there were a few folks watching who made me more than a bit uneasy.

Whew! Well, at least nothing happened. Photo of the hopper would be appreciated, or at least the road number that they gave it.

Excellent replicated stencilling job. Kudos to the crew! Thanks Keith so very much, for posting the photo. And also a thank you to Randy Anderson for taking it.

It's a sweet looking display piece. Now please be sure it remains painted and free of graffiti and rust. Those two conditions are the kiss of death for RR displays.

One of the things I appreciate about this car is that she is preserved, not restored. There are patches and dents all over her. Beauty marks, if you ask me.

As I mentioned early in this thread, Randy Anderson is the one person most responsible for saving this car in the first place. Others came along later and made important contributions too, of course. Randy also provided all the information for that magnificent lettering job. He certainly deserves credit for the fine photo, but that's just the smallest part of the credit he deserves.

While looking for a photo of the hopper there in Chambersburg, I came across this photo of a similar B&O hopper (except class W2B) that obviously DIDN'T make it into preservation:

Don't know the exact details of this accident, but note that the lettering on the hopper is of a slightly different variation.

Les,

I believe this was a short-lived early variation of the 13 Great States scheme. The scheme on the Chambersburg car was ultimately much more common. The "Big B&O (at least 2 variations) came along in the mid 1950's, but many cars carried the 13 Great States livery for many years after that.

Tom -

All of these B&O stenciling variations for their hopper cars are neat. The one chosen for the car in Chambersburg is probably my favorite.

Wow. That's really something. And to think that the B&O museum wouldn't accept it. That's very surprising. This is a really cool hopper in my opinion!

The B&O Museum also reportedly scrapped one of their two B&O offset twin hoppers a couple years ago, retaining one as a strange and unusual icebreaker. I don't understand their priorities, but I guess it's not up to me to explain it.
