If you are interested in "Hinckley Locomotive Works" in the 1850s, you are actually looking for the Boston Locomotive Works. Google/Wikipedia has a sketch of the company history. The company itself did its part in confusing the numbering of their products. The first image is a Boston Locomotive Works litho of one of their units with the builder's number 554 on the dome. This number is believed to be one of the two Boston locomotives that went to the Sacramento Valley RR. However, this lithograph locomotive bears little resemblance to the actual locomotive, as seen in the second and third illustration. Either the SVRR locomotive or the litho engine was not the 554.

Remarkably, the SVRR locomotive appears very similar to a 4-4-0 in Pensacola, FL. As seen in the last image. I have never seen this engine, but I believe it might be another survivor of the Boston Locomotive Works.

Apparently I can put only one image in a posting, so I will submit three additional posts.

This is a photo of the "Sacramento"'s BLW twin, after some rebuilding.

And finally, the locomotive in Florida hauled out of a river.

I believe this to be another Boston Locomotive Works engine.

Greetings:
Sorry to derail the thread, but I believe that the 4-4-0 pulled out of the "Swanee River" near Luraville, FL in 3/1979 by James Lancaster and later sold to the Florida Agricultural Museum in Tallahassee, FL in 1984 is Rogers, Ketchum & Grosvenor c/n 247, built 2/1851 for the Buffalo & Rochester Railroad as their #20 "ROCHESTER".
If you look at the back of the number plate, it is stamped "ROCHESTER CLASS A".
I credit the late William D. Edson for the identification of the locomotive, I just found the stampings when I inspected it in 1980. Edson was the author of hundreds of locomotive rosters published by the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society (R&LHS) over the years.
Be well,
J.David

Thank you. I do indeed appreciate your correction. I've had nothing to go on but the photographs.
