In regards to the other thread about the fatal handcar accident, I am interested to read what other organizations do in regards to safety in handling events where rides on handcars and motorcars are offered.

About three years ago the Utah State Railroad Museum began handcar rides during special events (such as National Train Day and the annual Hostlers Model Railroad Show), which were popular although at that point no specific safety training or preparation had been developed (However, the events were generally staffed by current railroad employees, so they did make sure that safety was a priority.)

The Golden Spike Chapter R&LHS recently completed the restoration of a motorcar for the museum and a passenger trailer is being built, with its own handbrake AND electric brake, to expand the ride opportunities. We are looking into preparing a safety manual for future events, and while much of it is obvious, I'd like to see what innovations or precautions other groups/museums/organizations have done to train staff and prepare events.

I would argue that motorcar safety is much different than handcar safety.

Please look here http://www.narcoa.org/. As these folks have hashed out a lot of the safety issues over their history and have run plenty of miles via motorcar including rides as you suggest. It would be a good source.
